Dinghui Temple

定慧寺

Plan Dinghui Temple conservatively around its water-surrounded layout, Guanyin Pagoda, ancient ginkgo trees, uncertain ticket details and Rugao old-town links.

Plan at a glance

Temple layout and visit length

Dinghui Temple is in Rugao's old town. Its gate faces north, and the Yu Dai River, Release Pond and Yu Lian Pond surround the temple. This makes the North Gate a useful starting point for seeing the water and central buildings first. The temple includes a seven-storey Guanyin Pagoda, the Mahavira Hall and two old ginkgo trees. A quick visit takes about 40 minutes; a full route takes about 1–1.5 hours.

The reference admission price is about CNY 20, with occasional free events on tourism days. Opening-time information varies between 05:00, 07:00 and 08:00. Arriving before 16:30 is the safer plan because it leaves time for the visit and the pagoda; early-opening information should be treated as a day-specific arrangement.

Link with Rugao old town

Dinghui Temple is about a 10-minute walk from Shuihui Garden, so the two can form a half-day route with East Street. The temple, garden and old street have separate ticket, reservation and opening arrangements; a Shuihui Garden reservation does not cover the temple.

Water-surrounded temple and Guanyin Pagoda

From across the Yu Dai River, you can photograph the temple, pagoda and reflections. After entering through the North Gate, the Release Pond, Vajra Hall, Mahavira Hall and the Guanyin Pagoda on the west side form the main route. The old ginkgo trees in front of the Mahavira Hall are especially suitable for autumn photographs, while eaves and bells work for close-up details.

The temple suits visitors interested in traditional architecture, photography, local history and a quiet walk. It is compact; the main reasons to come are the water-surrounded layout and the higher view from the pagoda, making it a good section of a Rugao old-town visit rather than a full-day destination by itself.

Build your day

About 40 minutes: a quick route

Enter through the North Gate and follow the central line of halls toward the seven-storey Guanyin Pagoda. If climbing is permitted that day, go up for views of the temple's water setting and Rugao old town, then return toward the North Gate.

With limited time, keep the North Gate, the water-surrounded view, the central halls and the Guanyin Pagoda as the priorities. Whether the pagoda is open for climbing depends on the day's arrangement; when it is closed, use the area below the pagoda and the riverbank for photographs.

About 1–1.5 hours: a full route

Enter through the North Gate and pause beside the Release Pond. Follow the central line through Vajra Hall and the Mahavira Hall, look at the old ginkgo trees, then continue to the Guanyin Pagoda on the west side. If climbing is open, add the upper view, then loop through the other temple courtyards before leaving.

After the temple, walk about 10 minutes to Shuihui Garden or continue along East Street. Dinghui Temple and Shuihui Garden use different entrance directions, so choose the exit that matches the next stop.

Get there

From Nantong to Rugao

From central Nantong, go to Nantong Station and take a high-speed train to Rugao Station; the train takes about 20–30 minutes. From Rugao Station, take a taxi or shared electric bicycle to Dinghui Temple, which takes about 15 minutes. The full journey can be about 40–50 minutes and suits visitors who prioritise speed.

You can also take a long-distance bus from Nantong East Coach Station to Rugao Coach Station, taking about one hour. Cross-district buses such as H02 and H03 cost less but run less frequently, so they suit visitors with more flexible timing.

Driving and walking in the old town

The drive from central Nantong to Dinghui Temple is about 60 kilometres and takes about one hour without traffic. Once in Rugao's old town, Shuihui Garden, Dinghui Temple and East Street are suitable for walking or shared electric bicycles, reducing the need to park repeatedly in the historic centre.

Know before you go

Ticket and opening-time uncertainty

The reference ticket price is about CNY 20, with possible free events on tourism days. Opening times vary in the available arrangements, so arriving before 16:30 is the safest choice. The temple is usually busier on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month and public holidays; choose another time for a quieter visit.

Ticket prices, free events, pagoda access and temporary temple arrangements should be treated as separate details. Do not use Shuihui Garden's free-reservation rules to infer the temple's ticket or opening time.

Nearby food and breaks

Sihailou and other Rugao restaurants near the temple serve local crab soup dumplings and fish soup noodles. Yingchun Bridge Old-Stove Flatbread is about an 8-minute walk away and fits well into a Shuihui Garden or East Street route. Holiday meal times may be busy.
