Plan Jinzi Mountain as a dedicated high-mountain day, choosing between cable car and the 999-step hike.

Plan at a glance

The cable-car short route and the 999-step hike are completely different levels of effort

Jinzi Mountain’s main peak is around 1,417 m. It suits a day of mountain climbing, cloud views and high-elevation scenery, but choose the route by fitness first. A one-way cable car uphill, the glass bridge and Golden Summit, followed by a slide or boardwalk down, take around 2–3 hours. Walking from the trailhead up the 999-step Love Ladder and Bamboo Forest Path to the summit, then descending, normally takes 5–6 hours.

The 999 stone steps are very steep and close to a direct climb. They suit people with hiking experience and stable knees. Travellers with older adults or children, or those who only want the three-province mountain views, are better served by the cable car and short walking; do not treat the hiking route as compulsory simply because it is a lower-priced ticket option.

In winter, expect possible ice scenery in cold snaps, not a promise of rime

During cold spells from December to February, ice formations and rime may appear at the summit, but they depend on low temperatures, humidity and weather and are not present every day. Winter roads, the cable car and high-elevation paths may be delayed by ice, snow clearance or strong winds, so allow time for waiting or a route change.

The attraction is usually open from around 07:30 to 17:30, with entry stopping at around 16:30; winter arrangements may end earlier. Supplies in this remote mountain setting are limited, so especially in cold weather do not treat summit shops, hot water or accommodation as full support.

Choose your visit

2–3 hours: cable car, glass bridge and Golden Summit

Take the one-way cable car uphill in around 10 minutes, visit the high-elevation glass bridge and Golden Summit viewpoint, then descend by slide or boardwalk depending on your energy. This route gives you high forest, valley and three-province views, and suits visitors with limited time or no wish for continuous stair climbing.

The glass bridge is at a higher elevation and feels exposed to wind. Travellers uneasy with heights can go directly to Golden Summit or another viewpoint rather than using the bridge for the sake of a package. Also confirm the descent method when buying tickets, rather than assuming every ticket includes a return cable car.

5–6 hours: the 999-step ladder and summit hiking route

From the trailhead, take the Love Ladder and Bamboo Forest Path to the summit viewpoint, then descend by boardwalk. This suits fit travellers willing to accept sustained uphill climbing. Time for handrails, rests and water all needs to be included; do not estimate summit time at a flat-ground pace.

Do not force your way up steep steps in cold, wet or rainy conditions. With ice or snow, follow on-site opening arrangements and safety-equipment requirements. The hiking route is not an automatic alternative when the cable car is delayed or has a queue; assess weather, time and fitness first.

Build your day

Put the cable-car views and descent option in a clear order

On arrival, first confirm the cable-car queue, glass-bridge opening status and whether the slide or boardwalk is available for descent, then decide whether to go uphill. Once up, see the glass bridge and Golden Summit first. In strong wind or heavy cloud, reduce time on exposed platforms before choosing the descent route.

Cable-car queues can last hours in winter. For ice scenery or holiday visits, aim to arrive before 08:00. Keep warm, drink water and maintain phone charge while waiting, and do not leave your final transport connection until after the cable car.

Break the hiking route into supply and rest stages instead of making the summit the only goal

Before starting the 999 steps, check shoe grip, rain gear, water and insulation, then climb at your own pace. Rest only in safe places and do not block narrow stairs for photographs. After reaching the summit, assess wind, body temperature and time needed to descend before adding other viewpoints.

Summit shops are relatively expensive, and hot food and hot water may be limited. Bring energy bars, a thermos and necessary food. Phone batteries drain faster in low temperatures, so carry a power bank and save navigation and return-transport information offline.

Get there

Treat the final 20 km of a self-drive trip as mountain-road driving

The drive from the Pearl River Delta takes around 3–4 hours. Navigate to “Jinzi Mountain Original Ecological Leisure Resort Scenic Area”; the final roughly 20 km are narrow, winding mountain roads. Winter ice and snow can close the road or require queueing for snow clearance, so inexperienced and night-time drivers should not force an ascent.

Organise equipment after parking at the foot of the mountain rather than carrying every warm item, spare pair of shoes and all food out of the car. Mountain-foot parking fees do not replace cable-car or slide tickets, so confirm what is actually operating before buying.

Non-drivers need to confirm the attraction connection and downhill time window

First reach Lianshan Bus Station, then change to the attraction shuttle or a local vehicle. Confirm departures, waiting time and the final service before setting out. In changeable mountain weather, do not base the return only on an estimated journey time; leave a buffer for cable-car delays and the downhill road.

Jinzi Mountain is around an hour’s drive from Lianzhou Underground River and is not a quick add-on to a Lianzhou day. If you want to link the two, use two days or at least protect enough time for the complete mountain-road return journey.

Know before you go

Prepare winter equipment and summit accommodation for low temperatures

During cold spells, bring crampons, a windproof waterproof outer layer, warm hat and gloves, and a thermos. Crampon hire can be a backup, but do not wait until the ground has frozen to start preparing. In heavy rain, use reliable rainwear rather than opening an umbrella in strong wind at high elevation.

Summit cabins have limited wind protection and hot-water conditions, and temperatures on cold-spell nights can approach or fall below freezing. Anyone staying overnight needs sufficient sleeping insulation or should stay at the foot of the mountain or in the county town instead. Ice formations, cloud seas and sunrise all depend on conditions and are not promised.

Keep Jinzi Mountain as a dedicated high-mountain day

Jinzi Mountain works better as a stand-alone day for hiking and a usable weather window, not with Lianzhou Underground River, the Three Gorges or distant Yao villages added on the same day. Stops such as Oujia Terraces and high-mountain tea gardens should also be chosen by driving time and return-road timing, rather than straight-line map distance.

Weekdays and weekends outside severe cold spells usually have shorter queues. In the ice-and-snow season, even an early arrival may still require changes to roads, the cable car or walking paths. Staying safe, warm and able to descend on time matters more than pursuing a single rime photograph.
