Lianzhou Underground River combines a roughly 1.5 km underground waterway, upper and middle cave levels, and a lower-level boat ride into one complete visit, usually taking 2–3 hours. The cave is around 18–22°C and very humid, so bring a light layer even in summer, and put non-slip shoes and phone waterproofing ahead of photography gear.
The adult ticket normally includes the boat ride and commentary, and buying online in advance is often more suitable than buying at the gate on the day. The attraction is usually open from 08:30 to 17:00, with entry stopping at around 16:00. For an easier visit, count the boat queue, cave walking and the walk back to parking together.
Walk first and take the boat afterwards; on busy days, take the boat from Entrance B first
The standard route walks through the upper and middle cave levels before taking a boat through the underground river on the lower level. This lets you see Immortals’ Sacred Fields, stalactites and the cave waterfall from the higher sections down. Travellers with older companions, limited time or a wish to reduce crowd exposure can instead enter by boat at Entrance B and walk out towards Entrance A.
The highlights are the same on both routes; the difference is the order of queues and walking. On holidays, do not treat an informal motorcycle shortcut as an arrival plan. Arriving early, using official parking and following the proper entrance flow is more reliable than changing to an unregulated vehicle in a congested section of road.

1.5–2 hours: take the underground-river boat first, then see the upper cave
When time is short or you are with older adults or children, go straight to the pier after entry, take the roughly 40-minute boat ride through the underground river, then go ashore to see the gentler upper cave sections before leaving. The boat passes stretches including Lotus Gorge, Banana Gorge and Dragon Gate Gorge, giving you the representative experience with less walking.
This route still involves wet ground and getting on and off the boat, so it should not be treated as fully accessible. If the boat queue is very long, walk the cave section first and then decide whether to keep waiting; do not rush through the cave just to stay on schedule.
2.5 hours: walk for the cave’s layers, then finish by boat
Visitors wanting more cave detail can explore the upper and middle levels first, focusing on Immortals’ Sacred Fields, Golden Rooster Heralding the Dawn, the Longevity Stalagmite and the large cave waterfall, then take the underground-river boat out. Walking first and boating afterwards is better for photographing the calcified pools, stalactites and quieter cave scenes.
On holidays, consider the reverse route with the boat first from Entrance B to avoid the main queue at the same time of day. Whichever entrance you use, keep an eye on final entry and boat operating times, and do not go deep into the cave close to closing.
Build your day
Standard route: walk the upper and middle levels, then take the underground-river boat out
After entering, follow the cave paths through the upper and middle levels, stopping at viewpoints such as Immortals’ Sacred Fields, then descend to the pier for the boat through the underground river. Take photographs at the walking stops; on the boat, focus on the waterway, natural arches and ceiling stalactites instead of frequently changing position.
From the exit, the walk back to the parking area normally takes only around 5–10 minutes. Unless walking is genuinely difficult, there is no need to pay extra for the uphill magic carpet to save this distance. Cave souvenir photos and frames are optional purchases, so decide whether to collect them after completing the route.
Busy-day route: take the boat from Entrance B, then walk towards Entrance A
When crowds are heavy, take the boat from Entrance B first, putting the most congested water section at the beginning of the visit, then follow the cave paths out towards Entrance A. This does not guarantee no waiting, but it avoids joining the queue only after all tour groups reach the pier together.
The reverse route still requires slow movement on steps, wet ground and marked paths. Do not walk against the flow or cross barriers to catch a boat. Agree on a boat and exit meeting point with companions at the entrance, as cave signal and lighting can make communication harder.
Get there
Drive directly to Parking Lot No. 1 or the visitor centre
The drive from Guangzhou takes around 3–3.5 hours. Navigate to Lianzhou Underground River Parking Lot No. 1 or the visitor centre, and deal with ticketing after parking. Roads into the attraction can become congested after 09:00 on holidays, so arriving early is more reliable than looking for improvised roadside parking or transport later.
From central Lianzhou, take a bus towards the Underground River or change in Dongpi Town, but the drop-off point may still require walking or a short connection to the actual entrance. Non-drivers should leave enough time for this final section and for the return to town.
Use arrival time to reduce the boat wait
Tour groups often concentrate between 10:30 and 14:30. To wait less for boats, enter soon after opening or arrive later in the afternoon. Parking, ticket collection, cave entry and the boat queue are separate processes, so do not calculate the full visit only from map walking time.
The temperature difference, damp ground and dripping water affect comfort inside and outside the cave. Change into non-slip shoes and secure electronic equipment before entering; keep dry clothes and a light layer in the car for a more comfortable exit.
Know before you go
Shoes, waterproofing and temperature change matter more than extra activities
The cave is wet and often has dripping water, so wear non-slip trainers and bring a phone waterproof pouch and a light layer. Lighting on the boat and in the cave is dim; do not cross railings or stop for long in boarding and disembarking passages while taking photographs.
There is no need to add physical effort simply to complete every paid activity. The magic carpet is only useful for people who genuinely cannot manage the walk. Children, older adults and slower-moving visitors should allow more buffer for both the boat queue and the walking paths.
It can be paired with Huangchuan Three Gorges, but calculate tickets and arrival separately
Huangchuan Three Gorges is around a five-minute drive from the Underground River, making it practical to visit the cave in the morning and take a later gorge cruise. Parking, boat tickets and entrances are separate at the two sites, so do not apply the Underground River’s boat-queue timing to the Three Gorges cruise.
Dongpi cured meats, Lianzhou choy sum, triangular dumplings and cut rice noodles are better meal choices in Dongpi Town or central Lianzhou; an attraction-side farmhouse restaurant does not have to be the day’s only option. On a two-day trip, pair the cave visit with dinner in town on the same day.
