Plan at a glance

How the Shanhaiguan area fits together

Shanhaiguan (山海关) is a spread-out area of mountain, coast, and walled town, with no single pass covering every attraction. Shanhaiguan Old Town (山海关古城) is commonly entered through the West Gate Visitor Center or the South Gate. Old Dragon's Head lies on the Bohai coast south of town, while Jiaoshan Great Wall (角山长城) and the Great Wall Museum (长城博物馆) can be added to a northern route.

Half a day or a full day

A half-day combination takes about four hours: visit Old Dragon's Head in the morning and return to Shanhaiguan Old Town in the afternoon. For a full day, start at Jiaoshan, continue to the coast in the afternoon, then return to the old town in the evening. Each site has its own ticket and hours, so check closing times before choosing the order.

Choose your visit

The pass, coast, and mountains

The old town is for its gate architecture and lanes; the coast is where the Great Wall meets the Bohai Sea; and Jiaoshan offers elevated views and a cable car. The Great Wall Museum adds historical context. For a half-day visit, prioritize the old town and coast; with a full day, add Jiaoshan or the museum.

Who will enjoy this area

Visitors interested in the Ming-era Great Wall, historic buildings, and local history can combine the old town and coast in one day. Families can balance the easier town lanes and seaside walk with the mountain attractions. Old Dragon's Head has softer light in the morning and works well for silhouettes near sunset; Jiaoshan has better visibility on a clear afternoon. Night performances in the old town depend on the date.

Build your day

Four-hour old town and coast itinerary

Spend the morning at Old Dragon's Head and return to Shanhaiguan Old Town in the afternoon. Enter through the West Gate Visitor Center or the South Gate and focus on the lanes and gate area. If you set out late in the morning, check the last-entry time at the coastal attraction before combining both areas in one day.

Jiaoshan, the coast, and the old town at night

For a full-day route, start at Jiaoshan Great Wall and use the cable car up and down. Continue to Old Dragon's Head in the afternoon, then return to the old town toward evening. Night visits, molten-iron performances, and light shows run only in certain seasons or on selected dates; add an evening visit when the day's program confirms it.

Use the Great Wall Museum as an alternative

The Great Wall Museum is free and is generally open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. It closes on Mondays except public holidays. It works as a cultural stop near Jiaoshan; if you visit on a Monday, spend that time in the old town or by the coast instead.

Get there

From Shanhaiguan Railway Station

A high-speed train from Beijing to Shanhaiguan takes about 1–1.5 hours. From the station, a short walk or taxi ride costing around RMB 10 will take you to the old town. If you are visiting the old town first, set the West Gate Visitor Center or South Gate as your navigation destination. For Old Dragon's Head, navigate directly to the attraction.

Getting between sites and parking

Bus 25 links First Pass Under Heaven and Old Dragon's Head; the fare is about RMB 2. Taxis are also available around the district. Parking at Old Dragon's Head is about RMB 10 per visit, while parking at First Pass Under Heaven is about RMB 30 per day. Spaces fill up during holidays, and the old town's lanes are narrow, so do not drive into them.

Know before you go

Tickets by attraction

Each attraction sells its own tickets, and some multi-site passes are available. Before buying, check which sites are included, the valid date, and the number of permitted entries. The Great Wall Museum is free; child, student, and senior discounts follow each site's ticket rules.

Opening hours and evening visits

Old Dragon's Head, First Pass Under Heaven, and Jiaoshan each set their own hours, which can change by season. Night admission and performances are available only at certain times. Check the relevant attraction's notice and last-entry time before setting out; allow for travel between sites when planning a multi-stop day. The Great Wall Museum closes on Mondays except public holidays, so fit it into an open day if you plan to visit.

Weather, crowds, and food

The coast and city wall have little shade in summer, so bring sun protection. The sand at Old Dragon's Head can get hot; wear shoes suitable for walking on sand. Attractions and parking areas can be crowded during holidays. Compare prices before buying souvenirs in the old town. For local food, try Zhigang Shuanyuan (志刚涮园) for hun guo (浑锅), a local Shanhaiguan-style hot pot; Huiji Gaodian (回记糕点) and Taizi Guo (太子锅) are other local specialties.
