A very small ancient city
Dahao Ancient City is in Dahao Subdistrict, Haojiang District, with a preserved area of around 0.014 square kilometres; enter through the east gate, Dashan Gate, or the west gate, Xihao Gate. The old city is free, needs no reservation and is accessible throughout the day, but lighting is limited at night; smaller sites such as the City God Temple have reference hours of 08:30–17:30.
How much time to allow
The wall is around 429 metres long and takes 10–15 minutes to circle, so do not treat it as a large ancient city that needs a whole day. Allow around 1 hour for a quick circuit, or 3–4 hours if you add fish balls, the fishing harbour at sunset or Qingyun Rock.

Around 1 hour: gates and wall
Enter through the east gate, follow the wall to the southeast lookout for views inside and outside the city, then leave through the west gate. You can pause outside the west gate afterward, but the appeal is in the narrow lanes, wall and lived-in atmosphere rather than a dense run of large sights.
3–4 hours: old city, sweet soup and harbour
Spend around an hour in the old city, then have mung-bean sweet soup around Sanjiaopu and a meal at a fish-ball shop before walking Dahao Riverside Road for returning fishing boats around sunset. Long-running local shops may close early in the afternoon, so arriving around lunch is more reliable than saving all food stops for the evening.
Combine it with mountain and coast
After the old city in the morning, drive around 10 minutes to Qingyun Rock Scenic Area or around 20 minutes to Small Park for an evening walk. If you add Cuoshi Scenic Area, leave separate time for crossing the water and the hiking effort rather than compressing the day according to straight-line distance.

Walk the gates, wall and lanes
After entering, look at the east and west gate openings, then climb the southeast lookout to see the wall and street pattern from above. The lanes follow a four-by-three grid; walk Yongxing Street, Qingyun Lane and Yonghao Street slowly, looking for stone paving, older gateways and spaces still used by residents.
Continue to the harbour and local food
Walk to Dahao Fishing Harbour in the afternoon for the boats and coastal light near sunset; the old city itself does not need a long stay, so it is best used as part of a food-and-riverside-walk sequence. Fish-ball kway teow soup, cuttlefish-roe cake and mung-bean sweet soup are possible stops, but set the order by the shops’ opening hours.

Bus and taxi
From Shantou Railway Station, take Route 33 to Xidun stop and change to Route 35; alternatively, take Route 8, 33B or 37 to Haojiang District Government stop and walk around 10 minutes. A taxi from central Shantou usually takes around 30 minutes with a listed fare of CNY 30–40, making it suitable to combine with other Haojiang District stops.
Driving and parking
Drive to Dahao Ancient City; West Gate Square has a listed parking fee of CNY 5 per day, and Jiangbei Road and nearby areas also have paid spaces, though availability is inconsistent. Once inside, walk only; do not take motorcycles or bicycles into the lanes.
Know before you go
Setting expectations and using the light
The old city is small and should not be judged by the museum count or commercial facilities of a large ancient city; pair it with the harbour, food or Qingyun Rock for a more complete visit. The 15:00–17:00 period suits the wall’s light, 17:00–18:00 can be used for the harbour, and early morning works for the market outside the west gate.
Community etiquette and the evening
This is a residential area, so keep your voice down, do not linger to photograph directly outside doorways, and never enter private courtyards. Lighting is limited and older shops close early, so leave the old city before dark and plan dinner in the surrounding area or central Shantou.
