Shantou Small Park Open Port Area is in Jinping District’s Small Park Historic and Cultural District, with Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion at its centre. Enter from Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion, the north side of Zhenbang Food Street, or Waima Road to the west; the district is free and accessible on foot throughout the day, while some museums require ID for entry and usually open from 09:00–17:00, closing on Mondays.
How much time to allow
This is a practical half-day or full-day city walk for combining arcade architecture, Chaoshan snacks and the Inner Bay at sunset. Allow around 2 hours for the core district, or 6–8 hours for a first visit that includes museums, meals and the ferry.

Around 2 hours: the core district
Start at Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion, then see the exterior of Shantou Hotel, the General Post Office and Zhenbang Food Street before finishing within the district. The route is entirely walkable and works well on arrival day or between longer activities.
6–8 hours: a first-visit day
Begin around Shantou Hotel in the early morning, then continue to Laoma Palace Theatre, the department store, the General Post Office and the Open Port Culture Exhibition Hall. Spend the afternoon at Xidi Park for sunset over the Inner Bay, take the Guangchang Ferry, and use Longyan South Road as your evening meal and late-snack stop.
Architecture and overseas-Chinese history
Visitors interested in modern architecture and overseas-Chinese history can continue from Small Park to the Qiaopi Museum, Cai Chusheng Film Museum, Shantou Firefighting History Museum and the older Western-style buildings on Waima Road. This route includes several museums, so avoid Monday and adjust it to each venue’s entry arrangements that day.

Morning: begin with the radial arcade streets
Start around Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion to understand the radial street pattern and arcade façades, then continue to Shantou Hotel and the General Post Office. Go early for quieter street scenes; on the second floor of the post office you can write a postcard and add a commemorative postmark.
Afternoon and evening: museums, bay views and food
Use the afternoon for the Open Port Culture Exhibition Hall or another open museum, then walk to Xidi Park for views of Queshi Bridge and the Inner Bay as the light changes. Take the Guangchang Ferry around sunset and have dinner on Longyan South Road or just outside the old city; do not try to combine the narrow-lane walking route with driving inside the district.

Arriving from the stations
Shantou Railway Station is the more convenient arrival point, with a taxi ride of roughly 10 minutes to the district; coming from Chaoshan Station usually requires an intercity connection or a taxi ride of around 40 minutes. Walk once you arrive, use taxis for short cross-city trips, and take extra care around pedestrians if using a shared e-bike in narrow lanes.
Driving and parking
The core district has slow-traffic controls and cars cannot enter, so do not drive into the lanes looking for short-stay parking. Use Xidi Parking Lot, Nanyue Building Multi-storey Car Park or Tongping Parking Lot, then walk into the central area.
Know before you go
Timing and crowds
The district is especially busy on public holidays; early morning and the 16:00–18:00 angled-light period are better for photographs and walking, while the arcade streets and lanterns can be seen after dark. Avoid Monday for museum-focused visits and allow time for security, registration or queues.
Food and the ferry
The old city is good for grazing between stops, but use fixed-price restaurants and confirm prices and portions; raw marinated seafood may not suit sensitive stomachs. Guangchang Ferry is a local commuter ferry with a listed one-way fare of CNY 1, and is the practical choice if you simply want to cross the water and see the Inner Bay.
