The wider old-city area
Shantou Old City also centres on Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion, but this visit can extend to Waima Road, Zhenbang Road, Fuping Road and the surrounding former port streets. The district is free and accessible on foot throughout the day; interior venues such as the Open Port Culture Exhibition Hall and the Chaoshan Museum usually open from 09:00–17:00 and many close on Mondays.
How much time to allow
Make the old city the main thread of a full day if you want to cover a wider area of arcades, older Western-style buildings, museums and food. The key landmarks take around 2–3 hours; allow 6–8 hours if you add museums, Xidi sunset and the ferry.
Ready to book?
Use the standard admission package for the core shuttle route; confirm the visit date and current opening hours before checkout.

2–3 hours: a first introduction
Start at the sign front of Shantou Hotel, walk to Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion and the General Post Office, then pause for snacks around Zhenbang Street. This route stays within the core district and suits visitors who are not entering museums or have limited time that day.
6–8 hours: a port-city and bay day
Start at Shantou Hotel in the early morning, then visit Laoma Palace Theatre, the department store, the General Post Office and the Open Port Culture Exhibition Hall. Continue to Xidi Park in the afternoon, take the Guangchang Ferry around sunset, and have dinner on Longyan South Road; this keeps the longer walks out of the hottest part of the day.
Deeper architecture and history
Extend from Small Park to the Qiaopi Museum, Cai Chusheng Film Museum, Shantou Firefighting History Museum, the older Western-style buildings on Waima Road and Chaoshan Railway Park. This route is more spread out than the core walk, so allow at least half a day and wear comfortable walking shoes.
Build your day
Morning: lanes and modern architecture
See Shantou Hotel and Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion first, then walk through the arcade streets to the General Post Office and nearby older buildings. Waima Road works best in the morning or near sunset, when you can look at the historic façades without the midday heat and heavier foot traffic.
Afternoon: museums, the bay and dinner
Choose the Open Port Culture Exhibition Hall or the Qiaopi Museum according to opening hours, then continue to Xidi Park for sunset. Take the Guangchang Ferry afterward and return to Longyan South Road or the Shangping Road area for dinner; the old city’s lanes are not suitable for rushing between stops by shared bike.
Get there
Station and local arrival
From Shantou Railway Station, a taxi to the old city takes roughly 10 minutes; Chaoshan Station is farther away and normally requires an intercity connection or a journey of around 40 minutes. The sights are concentrated once you arrive, so walk the old city and use a taxi or shared e-bike only for cross-city transfers.
Driving limits
The core district has slow-traffic controls, one-way streets and narrow lanes, which makes driving in and parking difficult. Use Xidi Parking Lot, Nanyue Building Multi-storey Car Park or Tongping Parking Lot, then complete the main route on foot.
Know before you go
Museums and visitor numbers
Do not schedule a museum-heavy day for Monday; public-holiday afternoons are the busiest period in the old city, while mornings and times after 16:00 are better for street photography and walking. The arcades provide cover in rain, but stone paving and older streets can still become slippery.
Food and spending
The main old-city streets work for short snack stops, while Waima Road, Shangping Road and Longyan South Road are better for a fuller meal. Choose clearly priced restaurants, and remember that cold dishes such as raw marinated crab may not suit sensitive stomachs.
