Laoma Palace is at 4 Shengping Road in Jinping District, within the Small Park core area and connected alongside Guandi Temple; enter from the Shengping Road main gate facing the theatre. The palace is free and does not require a reservation, with 08:00–17:30 a useful reference visiting period; the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month have more worshippers.
How much time to allow
Allow around 1 hour to see the palace architecture, theatre exterior and nearby food, or 3–4 hours to combine it with Small Park, the General Post Office, the Open Port Culture Exhibition Hall and sunset at Xidi Park. This is a focused stop for Mazu belief, porcelain inlay, woodcarving and stone carving in the same walk.

Around 1 hour: architectural details
Look first at the roof porcelain inlay, dragon columns and carved gate of the palace, then cross to Laoma Palace Theatre and finish with food around Shengping Road. The route is short but detailed, so visit outside the busiest worship periods if you want time to study the roof and column work.
3–4 hours: an old-city half day
Start with Laoma Palace and the theatre, then walk to the Small Park arcades, Shantou Hotel, the General Post Office and the Open Port Culture Exhibition Hall before reaching Xidi Park around sunset. This connects religious architecture, port-city architecture and the Inner Bay without needing repeated vehicle trips inside the district.
A cultural extension
For more temples and local traditions, continue to Guandi Temple, Longwei Temple, Cunxin Mansion, Guanyin Temple, Dafeng Temple and the Qiaopi Museum. These stops are largely walkable, but respect residents’ lives and the order of religious sites.

Start with craft details in the palace
Begin with the double-dragons-playing-with-a-pearl porcelain inlay on the main ridge, then look at the side-ridge figures, auspicious animals, carved granite dragon columns and gilded openwork woodcarving. Walk to the side for the red walls and carved windows; afternoon light is better for seeing the colour and layering of the roof inlay.
Continue to the theatre and old city
Laoma Palace Theatre is across the street, so visit it after the palace and then continue on foot into the Small Park core area. Free Chaozhou opera performances are commonly held on Saturday evenings and require ID registration; do not make Monday your main theatre-interior visit day.
Get there
Bus and walking
Routes 2, 3, 5 and 14, among others, reach Jinfengtan stop, followed by a walk of around 5 minutes to the core area. The palace and Small Park sights are close together, so walking after arrival is easier than cycling or driving through narrow lanes.
Driving and parking
Drivers can use Nanyue Building Car Park, Zhenbang Food Street Car Park or Tongping Parking Lot, but spaces are limited and the old city has many one-way streets. Arrive early, park on the perimeter and walk in along Shengping Road.
Know before you go
Etiquette and timing
Keep quiet in the palace, do not touch deities or offerings, and do not obstruct worship; move especially slowly on the busy first and fifteenth days of the lunar month. Around 08:00 and 16:00–18:00 are good for viewing the architecture, while public-holiday afternoons are noticeably busier.
Theatre and nearby food
The theatre’s reference opening hours are Tuesday–Sunday, 09:00–12:00 and 14:00–18:30, with Monday closure; performances follow the day’s arrangements. You can plan rice dumplings, oyster omelettes and Chaoshan rice cakes nearby, but fixed restaurants with confirmed prices are a steadier choice than hurried purchases from mobile stalls.
