1–1.5 hours: temple highlights
Enter through the mountain gate, first visit Liuyi Pavilion for the story of Han Yu and Chan Master Dadian, then continue to Guanyin Hall, Mahavira Hall and Shejing Pagoda. This compact walking route suits visitors who will not climb the surrounding old path or arrive later in the day.
2–3 hours: complete first visit
Visit Liuyi Pavilion, Guanyin Hall, Mahavira Hall, Shejing Pagoda, Xinlan Hall, the Sutra Library and Thousand Buddha Pagoda in that order, then return slowly along the old path. Put sections with steps and old tree roots in the earlier, more energetic part of the visit, then arrange vegetarian temple food or a meal in town.
Chaoyang cultural combination
Visit Lingshan Temple in the morning, eat in Tongyu Town, then continue to Wenguang Pagoda. This combination needs a car or taxi, so do not remain at the temple until evening and then plan a long return trip to the city centre.

Begin with Liuyi Pavilion, the main halls and the stone pagoda
Enter through the outer mountain gate, first reach Liuyi Pavilion, then visit Guanyin Hall and Mahavira Hall before looking closely at the bell-shaped Tang-dynasty stone pagoda, Shejing Pagoda. The pagoda, inscriptions and wooden structures within the halls all reward slow viewing; do not use flash for architecture or photograph the front of Buddha figures or deities inside the halls.
Continue through halls and the old path
Then go to Xinlan Hall, the Sutra Library and Thousand Buddha Pagoda before returning along the old path; the wall orchids in Xinlan Hall make a natural observation point. The temple dining hall serves a reference meal around 11:00, costing around CNY 20 or a voluntary offering, so connect your route and meal time in advance if you want to try it.

Arriving from the city and railway station
Driving from central Shantou takes around 40–50 minutes, and there is free parking at the temple gate. Take bus 123 to Lingshan Temple Road junction then walk about 15 minutes, or use the 309 special line from Chaoyang Railway Station; complete the temple route on foot after arriving.
Entrances and parking
The outer mountain gate is convenient for beginning at Liuyi Pavilion, while the inner mountain gate is closer to the main hall; the outside-in sequence is better for a first visit. There are more worshippers on public holidays, but the square and temple car parks reduce vehicle pressure when arriving and leaving.
Know before you go
Visiting etiquette and crowds
There are more worshippers on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month and during public holidays, while weekdays and earlier periods are quieter for visiting. You may use the environmentally friendly incense provided by the temple; confirm rules and charges before other incense offerings or vegetarian meals, and keep worship areas clear.
Clothing and photography
The temple has steps, old tree roots and stone paths, so non-slip shoes are more practical than slippers or high heels; plain-coloured clothing is also more suitable for a religious site. Early morning and 16:00 light suit exterior architecture, but do not enter restricted areas or disturb worshippers for photographs.
