Bibei Yao Village

必背瑶寨

Plan Bibei Yao Village as a living village visit, with a separate paid reception and performance area, narrow mountain roads, and limited facilities.

Plan at a glance

Two different experiences

Bibei Yao Village is in Bibei Town's Bibei Dacun, Ruyuan Yao Autonomous County. For navigation, use “Bibei Dacun” or “Bibei Village Committee” rather than relying only on the vague destination “Bibei Yao Village Scenic Area.” Bibei Dacun is a living village with free entry. The reception building and folk-performance area have a reference ticket price of CNY 30–45, and they are not the same area.

The village takes 1–3 hours. Adding a long-table feast, accommodation, or nearby museums can extend the visit to half a day or two days. Folk performances usually run from 14:00–16:00, but some facilities may be under repair. Leave room for changes in the day's conditions.

What to expect

This is better for visitors interested in Yao villages, architecture, and daily life than for anyone looking for a fully equipped theme park. Food and accommodation in the main village are limited, and the final mountain road is narrow. The route needs respect for both transport conditions and village life.

Choose your visit

The living village

Bibei Dacun is mainly about yellow walls, stilt houses, terraced fields, streams, and village spaces that are still in use. It feels more like a living Yao village than a standardized scenic area, and suits visitors interested in architecture, ethnic culture, and rural observation.

Folk performances and long-table feast

The reception building may offer bamboo-pole dancing, wedding customs performances, long-table feasts, and related cultural activities. These are separate paid or reservation-based experiences. Visitors who want a performance or feast should check the time, group size, and day's operation; they are not automatically included in the free village visit.

Who it suits and whether to stay

Bibei suits cultural visitors willing to accept mountain roads, limited facilities, and a slower pace. Someone who only wants a short photo stop may not need to go deep into the village. Staying overnight adds a deeper Yao-village experience, but room, food, transfers, and maintenance conditions should all be confirmed in advance.

Build your day

Village walk

Start with the gate arch and Long Bridge, then follow the stream into the main village to see the stilt houses, terraces, and shared village spaces. The roads and homes are living areas. Ask before photographing residents or handicrafts, and do not enter private courtyards for a better frame.

Performance and long-table feast

If you want to see a folk performance, arrive at the reception building around 14:00 and confirm the day's schedule before deciding whether to join the long-table feast. The light fades after the performance, and the mountain return road and final 3 km of one-lane road should not be left until too late.

Get there

Driving

Driving from the Pearl River Delta takes about 3 hours. The final 54 km are county and mountain roads, and the village has another 3 km of one-way sections and passing points. Navigating to the Bibei Dacun Village Committee makes the free parking area easier to find. New or rainy-day drivers should slow down and use local transfers when necessary.

Public transport

From Shaoguan Station, go to Ruyuan Bus Station, then take a shared ride or taxi. The drive takes about 1 hour and costs about CNY 30 per person as a reference. Another option is to travel from Shaoguan Passenger North Station to Guitou Town in Lechang and transfer, but services are limited. Public-transport visitors should arrange the return vehicle in advance rather than planning only the one-way trip to the village.

Know before you go

Road conditions and maintenance

The final road clings to the slope and is narrow with sharp bends; risk is higher in rain. Ordinary self-drivers should not treat it as a road that can be entered at any time of night. Facilities such as Huanglongzhai may be under repair, so follow the conditions on the day and do not assume every area is open.

Costs and etiquette

The main village is free. The reception building and performance area may charge separately, and the long-table feast has its own food arrangement. These are three different costs, not one unified ticket. Ask before photographing residents, performers, or folk objects. Respect for local customs matters more than getting one particular shot.

Supplies and accommodation

Food, lodging, and convenience shops in the village are limited. Fill up before entering the mountains and bring water. If you plan to stay, confirm the room, dinner, return transport, and any pickup service in advance. Conditions at one homestay do not represent the whole village.
