Plan at a glance
Main sights and duration
Zhanglao Peak is a zone within Danxia Mountain World Geopark. Navigate to “Danxia Mountain Zhanglao Peak Scenic Area” or “Zhongshan Gate.” The easier route takes about 3–4 hours; a deeper hike takes about 5–6 hours. The zone is open 06:30–18:00. For sunrise, work backward from the early departure time when arranging accommodation and transport.
Zhanglao Peak uses the Danxia Mountain main ticket, approximately CNY 100, valid for 48 hours and including the park shuttle. The cableway's maintenance and reopening schedule remains uncertain, so plan around walking and do not make a reopened cableway a condition of the trip.
Difficulty boundaries
Jinshi Rock Temple, Banshan Pavilion, and the cliff inscriptions make up a relatively gentle short route. The Dan Ladder Iron Cable, Sunrise Pavilion, First Line of Heaven, Yinyuan Stone, and Xianglong Lake form a longer and more tiring loop. The Dan Ladder Iron Cable approaches a near-vertical slope, and moss and wet rock increase the risk after rain. Visitors uncomfortable with heights should choose the short route in advance.

Sunrise and summit views
The Sunrise Pavilion is Zhanglao Peak's main high viewpoint, with views of sunrise, cloud seas, and the red-cliff peaks. The result depends on weather, visibility, and whether the route is open that day. Sunrise visitors need to be comfortable with an early start, low temperatures, and moving through dark sections before dawn.
Temples and cliff landforms
Jinshi Rock Temple, Biechuan Zen Temple, the Dan Ladder Iron Cable, First Line of Heaven, and Baizhang Gorge bring religious architecture, cliff paths, and narrow red-cliff passages into one zone. Their slopes and safety requirements vary considerably, so this is not one easy walking path.
Who it suits and how difficult it is
The short route suits ordinary visitors who want temples and mountain scenery. The long loop is for hikers with reasonable fitness who are comfortable with continuous climbs. The Dan Ladder Iron Cable approaches a near-vertical slope, and moss and wet rock increase the risk after rain. Visitors uncomfortable with heights or with knee problems should choose a shorter route.
Build your day
Sunrise route
Make the Sunrise Pavilion your main goal, leave early from your accommodation, and climb along the main Zhanglao Peak route via Jinshi Rock Temple. You may need to wake around 03:00–04:00. The mountain paths are not reliably lit at night, so confirm that the entrance is open, that you have companions, and how you will descend before setting out.
Full loop
The daytime deep route runs “Banshan Pavilion → Jinshi Rock Temple → cliff inscriptions → Biechuan Zen Temple → Dan Ladder Iron Cable → Sunrise Pavilion → First Line of Heaven → Yinyuan Stone → Xianglong Lake.” There is still a long descent and a lake section after the Sunrise Pavilion, so do not stay too long at the summit and then try to catch the last boat.
Temples and photography
Treat Jinshi Rock Temple, Biechuan Zen Temple, and the other religious spaces as places for quiet observation, and follow the local photography rules. The Sunrise Pavilion, Dan Ladder Iron Cable, Yudai Bridge, and Jinshi Rock Temple offer different photo subjects, but wet rock, iron cables, and cliff edges are not places to stop for a shot.
Get there
Driving and shuttles
Driving from the Pearl River Delta takes about 2.5–3.5 hours. Navigate to Zhongshan Gate or the Zhanglao Peak parking area; parking is approximately CNY 15 per day. During holidays, park outside and take the free shuttle. This is usually easier for time management than searching for a space on the internal roads.
High-speed rail and buses
The Danxia Mountain shuttle bus from Shaoguan Station takes about 1 hour, with a reference fare of around CNY 30. Buses from Shaoguan East Station also serve the area, taking about 50 minutes with a reference fare of CNY 20. After arriving, use the park shuttle to reach the Zhanglao Peak entrance. Public transport cannot replace the mountain hike.
Know before you go
Cableway and timing
The cableway has been under maintenance, and a forecast reopening month is not a current operating guarantee. Whether it has reopened or not, prepare a walkable route. Include the last shuttle, boat departures, and the park's 18:00 closing time in your plan.
Equipment and supplies
Moss and wet rock are common on the mountain paths, and the Dan Ladder Iron Cable requires both hands. Shoes with good grip and a light backpack are more suitable than ordinary casual shoes. Supplies on the mountain are limited and expensive, so bring enough water, energy snacks, and a light jacket from the foot of the mountain or the entrance.
Etiquette and fitness
Some religious spaces, including the Six Patriarch-style worship areas, may require quiet or prohibit photography. Do not use flash, step over thresholds, or disturb people praying. If someone in your group cannot complete the cable section or the long loop, agree on a meeting point in advance rather than splitting up on a mountain path without a signal.
