Plan at a glance
Cruise type and duration
Water Danxia is a cruise on the Jinjiang River within Danxia Mountain. Its main piers include Zhanglao Peak Pier and Yangyuan Pier. For navigation, use “Water Danxia Pier.” A single cruise takes about 50 minutes; adding walks at Yangyuan Mountain or Zhanglao Peak calls for half a day to a full day.
The cruise operates during 08:30–18:00, with the last departure changing by season. Aim to reach the pier by 17:00 at the latest. This is not the park shuttle included by default with the Danxia Mountain main ticket, and it cannot replace all walking routes at Zhanglao Peak or Yangyuan Mountain.
Ticket boundaries
The reference adult price for a standalone Water Danxia cruise is about CNY 120, but the inclusions differ between boat types, one-way or round-trip tickets, and combination products. Treat regular boats, higher-tier services, and evening products separately rather than combining every price into one fixed fare.
The Danxia Mountain main ticket, the Xianglong Lake boats, and Water Danxia are different products. If you only want the Jinjiang cruise, there is no need to buy a combination package full of unused “land, water, and air” products. If you also plan mountain walks and an evening visit, compare the available combinations against your actual plans.

Red cliffs along the Jinjiang
Water Danxia's strongest appeal is the view from the Jinjiang River: red cliffs, Sleeping Beauty, and Elephants Crossing the River appear from a continuous water-level perspective. The route does not require a long climb. The cruise takes about 50 minutes and is a good way to see Danxia Mountain's overall landscape before deciding where to walk.
Boat types and evening experiences
Regular boats, higher-tier services, and evening products offer different experiences, with different prices and inclusions. Commentary or interactive activities may be available on board. Seats, souvenirs, photo services, and performances depend on the product and should not be assumed to be included.
Who it suits and what to combine
Water Danxia suits low-effort visitors, families with children, photographers, and anyone who wants to understand the Danxia landscape from the water. Outdoor visitors can use it as a supplement before or after a land route. Before buying a combination product, decide whether you will really use Yangyuan Mountain, Zhanglao Peak, or an evening product as well.
Build your day
Pier to Yangyuan Stone
A relatively simple route is “Water Danxia Pier → Jinjiang cruise → Yangyuan Pier → Yangyuan Stone Viewpoint → return according to the shuttle schedule.” The boat section is mainly for viewing. After landing, choose a gentler walking section. This works well for first-time visitors who do not want an overpacked day.
Pier to Zhanglao Peak
Another option is to take the boat from Water Danxia Pier, disembark on the Zhanglao Peak side, and choose Jinshi Rock Temple, Banshan Pavilion, or a shorter viewpoint route. If you continue to the Dan Ladder Iron Cable, First Line of Heaven, Yinyuan Stone, and Xianglong Lake, allow 4–5 hours for the mountain section. These stops are not a ten-minute add-on to the cruise.
Evening arrangements
An evening product can be combined with the daytime cruise, but confirm the day's start time, exit transport, and shuttle arrangements first. Fixed show times and light performances depend on the day's operation. Do not assume that the same show or interactive program runs every evening.
Get there
Reaching the pier
Driving from the Pearl River Delta takes about 2.5–3.5 hours. Navigate to “Danxia Mountain Zhongshan Gate” or “Water Danxia Pier”; parking is approximately CNY 15 per day. After parking, use the free park shuttle to connect the pier with other zones. During holidays, avoid driving into congested internal roads.
After arriving at Shaoguan Station by high-speed rail, take the Danxia Mountain shuttle bus from outside the station. The ride to the scenic area takes about 1 hour. Once inside, moving between piers still requires the park shuttle or walking. When booking accommodation, check whether it is closer to the pier or the mountain gate, as the two locations affect early and late routes.
Know before you go
Last boats and weather
The last boat usually leaves before the scenic area's final closing time, so check the return departures as soon as you arrive in the afternoon. Rain, strong wind, or changing water levels may affect both the cruise and the shore routes. A cruise is not guaranteed to run as planned in every kind of weather.
On-board experience and photography
The route passes sights such as the Jinjiang red cliffs, Sleeping Beauty, and Elephants Crossing the River. A particular seat, free photos, keychains, poetry exchanges, or pot-throwing activities may not be available. Follow the crew's instructions when taking photos, and do not enter restricted areas or block boarding and disembarkation.
Relationship to other tickets
Water Danxia is not included in the Danxia Mountain main ticket or the Xianglong Lake boat fare, so there is no single “all-inclusive” price by default. If a combination route also includes Yangyuan Stone, Yinyuan Stone, or Zhanglao Peak, check the entrance, difficulty, and ticket rules for each part.
