Nature reserve status

Chebaling National Nature Reserve is in Siqian Town, Shixing County. It is a protected and ecological research area, not an ordinary hiking park where visitors can wander deep inside. A light walk takes about 1.5–3 hours; a driving crossing or deeper camping trip can take 1–2 days. The reserve is open 08:00–17:30, and entering after 17:00 is not recommended.

Entry to the reserve is free but requires registration at the entrance. The reference ticket for the Natural History Museum is about CNY 20, although some periods may be free. Reservations one day in advance are recommended. The core area, museum, driving crossing, and guide services have different access conditions; “free entry” does not cover every activity.

Ecology and route boundaries

The Visitor Center, ecological museum, old-tree groups, Jinghua Pond, and open forest paths suit ordinary visitor routes. The core area, roads whose opening status is unconfirmed, and possible crossing routes must follow reserve management, approval, and guide requirements.

Reserve ecology

Chebaling is mainly about its broad forests, old-tree groups, streams, and highly biodiverse environment. It suits nature observation and ecological education. The feeling of wilderness comes from a protected forest ecosystem under management; it does not mean visitors can enter any forest path or core area freely.

Museum and open paths

The Natural History Museum, Jinghua Pond, old-tree groups, and open wooden paths offer accessible ways for ordinary visitors to learn about the reserve. Fairy Maiden Pool Waterfall and the forest trail are better for visitors with some hiking experience, but still depend on that day's opening and guide requirements.

Who it suits and conservation boundaries

Chebaling suits family nature education, ecological photography, and outdoor visitors willing to follow conservation rules. Unauthorised entry into the core area, road crossings, and outdoor camping cannot be treated as free exploration. Free registration does not remove approval, guide, or safety responsibilities.

Build your day

Introductory ecology sequence

Follow “Visitor Center registration → Natural History Museum → old-tree group → Jinghua Pond → return.” Learn the open range and weather at the Visitor Center before deciding whether to enter the forest paths. This is more reliable than discovering the route restrictions after entering the woods.

Advanced sequence

An advanced route can enter through the Forest Wonder Trail, continue to the Negative-Ion Path and Fairy Maiden Pool, and return by the same route. Control your pace on the mountain sections; do not estimate a 6 km route at the speed of an urban park.

Get there

Driving

Driving from the Pearl River Delta takes about 3–4 hours. Navigate to the Chebaling Nature Reserve Visitor Center or Natural History Museum; parking is approximately CNY 20 per day. The final section is a mountain road. Fill up in Shixing County before heading in, and avoid driving at night.

Public transport

After arriving at Shaoguan Station by high-speed rail, transfer by bus to Shixing County, then take a local bus or taxi for about 40 minutes to the reserve. Services are limited. Visitors without a car should arrange the return or a guide in advance rather than relying on a late taxi request.

Know before you go

Conservation rules

Fires, plant collection, animal capture, and disturbing wildlife are strictly prohibited. Entering the core area requires approval and a professional guide. A “possible shortcut” or a claim that you can cross via a particular road is not a route for ordinary visitors.

Weather, supplies, and signal

Heavy rain can create slippery surfaces and landslide risks. Some sections have no mobile signal, so download an offline map and travel with companions. There are no convenience shops inside the reserve; prepare water, dry food, rain gear, and shoes with good grip before entering.

Return time

There are no lights in the reserve after 17:00, and wildlife activity increases at night. Leave before dark. If you plan to visit the museum, confirm its reservation and closing time first, then decide whether there is enough time for the forest route.
