Plan at a glance
Scope and time
Danxia Mountain Museum is near the Danxia Mountain Visitor Center. It is an indoor museum about Danxia landforms, earth science, and regional biology. It is open 09:00–17:00, with entry ending at 16:30. It is closed on Mondays, and public-holiday arrangements may differ.
Admission is free. You can enter by scanning your ID card or registering on site. Allow 1–2 hours for a normal visit, or 2–3 hours if you join educational activities or a stamp-collecting program. The museum is an independent educational stop, not another mountain entrance for the main Danxia Mountain scenic area.
How to use the stop
The museum works well before heading into Zhanglao Peak or Yangyuan Mountain to understand the landscape. It is also useful for families who need an indoor break during hot weather. The connection between the Outer Gate and the museum is separate from the main mountain ticket, so free museum admission does not mean that every mountain route is free.

Landforms and earth science
The museum's main displays include Danxia landform models, earth-science explanations, rock specimens, and a large-scale model of the scenic area. First-time visitors can use it to understand the relationship between the red cliffs, peak forests, and waterways before deciding whether they would rather walk the mountains, see the lake zone, or take a boat on the Jinjiang River.
Biology and nature observation
The biology displays and plant and animal specimens place Danxia Mountain's red rocks within its wider ecological setting. Educational activities such as birdwatching and firefly observation may require reservations. They suit families and visitors interested in nature education, but places should not be assumed to be available every day.
Who it suits
The museum suits families with children, first-time visitors, and anyone who wants to avoid the midday heat. It also makes a useful introduction before Zhanglao Peak or Yangyuan Mountain. It is not another mountain entrance; mountain views require a separate plan for the park ticket, shuttle, and walking route.
Build your day
Indoor visit sequence
Follow “Master Planning Hall → General Exhibition Hall → Earth Science Hall → Geology Hall → Biology Hall → Souvenir Area.” Start with the large model to understand the overall layout, then use the specialist galleries to learn how Danxia Mountain's landforms formed and how the regional ecosystem works.
Family pacing
With children, make the specimens, models, and interactive displays the main thread, with a break in the middle before deciding whether to continue to the main scenic area. The indoor and outdoor temperatures can differ noticeably, so leave time for rest and transfers between the museum and a mountain walk.
Get there
Driving and shuttles
Navigate to “Danxia Mountain Museum Parking” or the Outer Gate outside the scenic area. Parking is convenient and may be free. Once at the Visitor Center, the museum is close to the Outer Gate shuttle stop, so there is no need to buy add-on products for a full mountain route first.
The Danxia Mountain shuttle bus from Shaoguan Station takes about 1 hour to reach the scenic-area gate. Free internal shuttles connect the Outer Gate, museum, and other main zones. If you plan to hike on the same day, confirm the return direction and last shuttle first.
Know before you go
Closure and entry
Do not plan a museum visit on Monday, and do not treat arriving at the door after 16:30 as arriving in time to enter. Entry can be handled with an ID card or on-site registration. No complicated reservation process is needed unless the museum specifically requires one.
Indoor and outdoor equipment
The museum does not have a full food service setup, so bring drinking water. Air conditioning can make the galleries cool; a light jacket is useful. If you will continue to Yangyuan Mountain or Zhanglao Peak, bring separate hiking shoes, insect repellent, and sun protection.
Activity boundaries
Free museum admission does not make Water Danxia, Yangyuan Mountain, or Zhanglao Peak free. Educational courses, stamp-collecting, and souvenirs are add-ons and only make sense when they are operating and available that day.
