Plan at a glance

Scattered villages and season

Pingtian Ginkgo Township is in Pingtian Town, Nanxiong. The main villages include Aobei, Fengwu, Laoweili, and Wangtang. This is not one enclosed scenic area with a single ticket. Allow 4–6 hours, or 2 days and 1 night if you add sunrise and a homestay.

The main ginkgo season is approximately mid-November to early December, but temperature, wind, rain, and the speed of leaf fall can change the scene quickly. The area is free to visit, and parking in most villages is free. Some temporary parking areas may charge about CNY 10 per car. Do not expect every village to reach its best condition at the same time.

What kind of route it suits

Pingtian suits self-drivers, photographers, and visitors willing to move between villages. It is not a place you can finish by walking into one park. Mountain roads and narrow lanes connect the villages, facilities are limited, and the plan needs flexibility for navigation, parking, and weather.

Choose your visit

Ginkgo villages

The main sights are the old ginkgo tree in Aobei, the dense ginkgo woods in Fengwu, and the more scattered, quieter village settings of Laoweili and Wangtang. The experience comes from the trees, tiled old houses, village roads, and Hakka daily life together rather than from one enclosed park.

Seasonal scenery

Higher points such as Jungan Camp may offer sunset or cloud-sea views, while the ginkgo leaves appear in a short window in late autumn. Leaf conditions, clouds, and light all depend on the weather. Whether you see the hoped-for scene depends on the day, so do not treat it as a guaranteed photo result.

Who it suits and what pace to expect

Pingtian suits photography, self-driving, slow village travel, and visitors willing to move between several villages. People who prefer fixed sights, organized shuttles, and more facilities may find Maozifeng a better fit. Pingtian's main characteristics are that it is free, scattered, and village-based.

Build your day

Main village sequence

A practical order is “Aobei Millennium Ginkgo King → Fengwu Ginkgo Woods → Laoweili or Wangtang → return.” Tree age and density, old houses, and road conditions vary between villages. Do not assume that the photo conditions in one village represent all of Pingtian.

Morning and evening light

Morning works well for village scenes and light under the trees. In the afternoon, Jungan Camp can be a sunset option. Strong wind can strip leaves quickly, and roads and fallen leaves may become slippery after rain. Put driving and photography safety before the wish to find the perfect golden scene.

Get there

Driving and navigation

Driving from the Pearl River Delta takes about 4–5 hours. After leaving the expressway, allow another 30 minutes for mountain roads with many bends and narrow sections. Inexperienced drivers should drive in daylight. For Aobei, navigate to “Laopingtian Health Center” or the specific village entrance. Do not enter “Pingtian Ginkgo Forest Park” and blindly follow the system into narrow lanes.

Public transport

After arriving at Shaoguan Station by high-speed rail, transfer by bus to Nanxiong Bus Station, then take a local bus or taxi to Pingtian. Buses from Nanxiong Coach Station toward Aobei run approximately once an hour as a reference. Public transport and return connections are less flexible than driving. If you have luggage or plan to visit several villages, do not compress the schedule too tightly.

Know before you go

Leaf conditions and roads

Check recent leaf conditions before setting out. Strong wind may cause early leaf fall, while rain can stick leaves to muddy ground and affect both walking and photography. Do not park on village roads, bends, or field edges to avoid a traffic jam; narrow roads need room for vehicles to pass.

Supplies and payment

Food and convenience facilities in the villages are limited. Bring water, simple food, and a small amount of cash, as some older vendors may not accept online payment. Nanxiong food is spicy, so explain your preference when ordering. Eat where parking is safe and where the meal will not compromise the return journey.

Managing expectations

The ginkgo season is short. Golden color, full leaves on a particular tree, and a specific photo effect are not guaranteed. Pingtian is free and spread across villages, while Maozifeng has paid entry and managed shuttle transport.
