Plan at a glance

Small Xu Wei residence and opening hours

Qingteng Study is at No. 10 Dacheng Lane, Qianguan Lane, Yuecheng District, Shaoxing, in the core area of Xu Wei's former hometown. The usual entrance is the main gate of Qingteng Study. The site covers just over 400 square metres and takes about 30 minutes to visit. If combined with the Xu Wei Art Museum, Shaoxing Shiye Museum and Cangqiao Straight Street, allow about 2-2.5 hours.

Entry is free. Reserve in advance through the official mini-programme or scan an ID card according to the on-site arrangement. Opening hours are 8:30-17:00, with last entry at 16:30. It is closed on Mondays except during short public holidays and Golden Week. The Xu Wei Art Museum and other related venues have their own hours and charges.

Study, art museum and optional experiences

Qingteng Study is a small, free historic courtyard. Its main features are the courtyard, Tianchi Pond, the old wisteria, the Moon Gate and the single-storey study building. The nearby Xu Wei Art Museum is related but separate. Its digital light-and-shadow exhibition costs an additional RMB 10 per person, and its opening follows the exhibition arrangement on the day.

Choose your visit

Tianchi Pond, wisteria and Moon Gate

The study suits visitors interested in Xu Wei, Ming-dynasty literati life, quiet courtyards and framed Chinese-style views. The rear Tianchi Pond, the wisteria Xu Wei is said to have planted, the Moon Gate in the southern courtyard and the plaques and portraits in the study building are the details worth time.

The Moon Gate frames the depth of the courtyard, Tianchi Pond reflects the wisteria and water, and the study building provides background on the person and his calligraphy. The courtyard is very small, so the visit is about details rather than spending half a day in a large museum.

Separate visit to the Xu Wei Art Museum

The white buildings, courtyards and digital exhibition at the Xu Wei Art Museum offer a different experience from Qingteng Study, but they are not automatically included in the study's free visit. If you want to see the art museum or digital light-and-shadow exhibition, confirm its opening, drink restrictions and paid activities separately.

Build your day

30-minute quick route

After entering through the main gate, see the old trees and Moon Gate in the southern courtyard, then visit Xu Wei's portrait, plaques, courtyard well and Tianchi Pond in the northern study area. Finish at the Xu Wei collection display room and leave through the exit. The short route works well between Cangqiao Straight Street and another old-city walk.

2-2.5-hour cultural walk

First-time visitors can start at the Shaoxing Shiye Museum, learn about Shaoxing shiye culture, then visit Qingteng Study as Xu Wei's former residence. Depending on opening hours, continue to the Xu Wei Art Museum and finally walk to Cangqiao Straight Street for a rest. Each venue has its own hours and ticket arrangements; if a venue is closed, shorten the plan to the study and street walk.

Photography stop

A sunny morning or the period after 15:00 can work well for photographs. Focus on the Moon Gate, the wisteria shadows in the courtyard, the art museum's white walls and courtyard, and the rooftop terrace. Keep entrances and narrow paths clear, and move on when crowds or staff instructions require it rather than holding one position for too long.

Get there

Metro, buses and taxis

Take Shaoxing Metro Line 1 to City Square Station and use a shared bicycle from Exit C. Buses 2, 4, 5, 9 and b9A stop at the Jiefang Road-Lu Xun Road intersection, followed by a walk of about 4 minutes. A taxi from central Shaoxing takes about 15-20 minutes.

Qingteng Study is inside an old-city lane, so you still need to walk from the navigation point to the entrance. If combining it with the Xu Wei Art Museum or Cangqiao Straight Street, confirm venue hours first and then set the walking order.

Driving and parking

Consider Jiayin Plaza Car Park, with a reference price of RMB 10 for 4 hours, or the underground car park in Xu Wei's former hometown, east of the Shiye Museum. Narrow old-city roads are not suitable for searching for a roadside space, so park and walk in.

Know before you go

Monday closure and scale

Monday is the regular closure day, except during short public holidays and Golden Week, so confirm the date before travelling. Qingteng Study itself covers just over 400 square metres and can be seen in about half an hour. It is best for carefully viewing the courtyard and literati remains; extend the stop only if you also have nearby visits planned.

Drinks and paid activities

Drinks are not allowed inside, so finish them or store them according to the on-site instructions before entry. The Xu Wei Art Museum's digital light-and-shadow exhibition costs RMB 10 per person and is optional; leave room in both the budget and schedule to skip it if it does not suit you.

Qingteng Study is free, but reservation and ID verification are required. The art museum, digital exhibition and other Xu Wei-related venues operate separately. Cangqiao Straight Street is about a 10-minute walk away, but the two sites do not share a ticket and nearby venues may not open at the same time.
