Old pines, lake and lotus flowers
The park's outer area has old pine groves and a lake, with more than 2,000 pines over 300 years old. Lotus flowers bloom in summer. You can take a walk in the park before deciding whether to buy a ticket for the mausoleum precinct.
The above-ground buildings of Qing Zhaoling
Qing Zhaoling is the tomb of Hong Taiji (皇太极), the second Qing emperor. The visit focuses on the above-ground structures: the stone archway (石牌坊), Zhenghong Gate (正红门), the Spirit Way (神道) and the walled precinct (方城), including Long'en Gate (隆恩门), also known as the Five-Phoenix Tower (五凤楼). The underground burial chamber has not been excavated and is not open to visitors.
The sacred tree by the north gate
A distinctive old tree near the north gate is locally known as the “sacred tree” (神树). Add it as an optional extension if you have enough time and energy. The core route can be a return walk from the south gate; plan a separate extension if you want to continue to the north gate.
For a separate visit to Qing Fuling, see Qing Fuling Mausoleum (Dongling).
Build your day
Core route from the south gate
Enter through the south gate and follow the main path past the old pines and lake before entering Qing Zhaoling. Walk through the stone archway and Zhenghong Gate, then follow the spirit way to the walled precinct and Long'en Gate to see the mausoleum's central axis and above-ground buildings. Allow about 2–3 hours for the core visit. Areas open to visitors may vary.
North-gate extension
If time and energy allow, add the sacred tree near the north gate as a separate extension; otherwise, return from the core visit to the south gate. If you walk to the north gate, return on open paths in the park or arrange transport based on your location.
Get there
Metro and bus
Take Metro Line 2 to Beiling Park (北陵公园) Station. Exit at E and walk about 300 meters to the left to reach the south gate. Buses 217, 232, 245 and 325 stop at “北陵公园” (Beiling Park); walk from there to the entrance.
Getting around inside the park
Beiling Park is large, and both the mausoleum precinct and the outer park involve considerable walking. Sightseeing carts and rental bicycles are available, but routes, fees and operating hours depend on the arrangements on site.
Know before you go
Separate park and mausoleum tickets
To enter Qing Zhaoling, you need both a park ticket and a separate mausoleum ticket. The park and mausoleum have different seasonal hours and prices, and the park's free-entry periods also vary by season. Plan the mausoleum visit around its own opening and last-entry times, rather than the park's closing time.
Food, the burial chamber and walking
The underground chamber at Qing Zhaoling has never been excavated, so the visit focuses on the above-ground buildings. There is a lot of walking in both the park and mausoleum precinct; wear comfortable shoes. Adding the sacred tree by the north gate makes the walk longer.
Food options inside the park are limited and can be expensive. Nearby choices include Ma San Lamb Offal Shaomai (马三羊杂烧麦馆), about a 10-minute walk away; Hanweiyuan Charcoal-grilled Meat (韩味园果木炭烤鲜肉) near the east gate; and 1996 Smoked Meat Pancakes (1996熏肉大饼) near the west gate.
