Plan at a glance

Lake area and access

Jinji Lake Scenic Area is free and open all day, but the lakeside loop is about 15–20 kilometres, so walking the entire circuit uses a lot of time and energy. The west side begins around Oriental Gate, while the east side includes Times Square, the Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art area and Moonlight Wharf; first-time visitors should choose one section first.

Separate arrangements for lake projects

Oriental Gate, Eslite Bookstore, Suzhou Eye Ferris Wheel, sightseeing boats, water buses and the musical fountain each have their own tickets, hours and weather conditions. The free water bus requires an on-site ticket collected with an ID number at Wanghu Pavilion Wharf or Moonlight Wharf, and capacity is limited during holidays; free lake access does not make every project free or queue-free.

Choose your visit

West side and east side

The west side centres on Oriental Gate, Wanghu Pavilion and Jinshuiwan Pier, with views of the skyline, lake reflections and sunset. The east side brings together Eslite Bookstore, Moonlight Wharf and the Suzhou Eye Ferris Wheel, making it easier to combine books, commercial spaces and night scenery in one section.

Who it suits

Visitors interested in modern city views can walk around Oriental Gate and the lakeshore, while families, cyclists and visitors looking for a relaxed outing can choose a shorter section around Jinshuiwan or the east side. The musical fountain runs only on selected Friday, Saturday and statutory-holiday evenings and may stop in strong wind or thunderstorms, so plan it only after checking the day's schedule.

Build your day

A half-day west-to-east route

Start at Oriental Gate, walk to Wanghu Pavilion Wharf, take the water bus to Moonlight Wharf, then continue to Eslite Bookstore and the Suzhou Eye Ferris Wheel. Ticket collection and waiting time can change the order; if the day's water-bus tickets are gone, use the metro or a ride-hailing car between the west and east sides.

A full-day sectioned route

Spend the morning walking around Oriental Gate and Jinshuiwan, then move to Moonlight Wharf, Eslite Bookstore and the east shore in the afternoon. In the evening, choose the Ferris wheel or lakeside night views according to the weather. If you want the musical fountain, find a position near City Square early and arrange metro or ride-hailing transport for after the show.

Get there

West-side access

For the west side, take Metro Line 1 or 3 to Dongfangzhimen Station (东方之门); Wanghu Pavilion Wharf is near Exit 3. Oriental Gate, Jinshuiwan Pier and the west-side paths can be linked on foot, but the distances between points are still significant, so leave room in the schedule.

East-side access

For the east side, take Metro Line 1 or 8 to Times Square Station (时代广场), or Line 8 to Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art Station (当代美术馆). Moonlight Wharf is near Exit 2 of Culture Expo Centre Station (文化博览中心) on Line 1. Parking near Oriental Gate, Suzhou Centre and Eslite Bookstore is tight during holidays, so public transport makes timing easier.

Know before you go

Water bus and fountain

The free water bus requires an on-site ticket, and its departures and capacity may limit the day's route; it cannot always serve as a cross-lake connection. The musical fountain usually starts at 19:30 and lasts about 30 minutes, but viewing positions, wind and rain, and statutory-holiday arrangements can change.

Energy and spending

Jinji Lake is large, so walk the loop in sections rather than spending the day trying to complete one circuit. The Ferris wheel, boats, special exhibitions at the bookstore and food are charged separately; decide what you want to see first, then move according to each project's hours.
