Separate activities
No advance reservation is required, and climbing Ruiguang Pagoda costs an additional CNY 6 after entering the scenic area. Night lighting, performances and intangible-heritage activities depend on the season and date, while Wuxiang Shrine may be closed for repairs; a ticket or sign at the entrance does not guarantee that every point is open that day.

Water-and-land gates, pagoda and bridge
Panmen's main sights are its parallel water and land gates, Ruiguang Pagoda, Wumen Bridge and the relationship between the city walls and the canal. The bridge outside the South Gate is good for photographing the full gate complex and reflection, while the foot of Ruiguang Pagoda and the platform at Lijing Tower give different views of the pagoda, water and halls.
Who it suits
The daytime visit works well for visitors interested in historic sites, old buildings and canal scenery, while the night visit focuses more on lighting, performances and the waterside route. The wooden stairs inside Ruiguang Pagoda are narrow and steep, close to a 75-degree angle, so some older visitors, children and people afraid of heights should skip the climb.
Build your day
A 1-hour route
Enter through the East Gate, go first to Ruiguang Pagoda, then walk west to the water-and-land gates and climb the gate tower for views before leaving through the South Gate. If you want to climb the pagoda, enter the tower area before 16:00 and allow time for the narrow stairs and people moving in both directions.
A 2–3 hour route
Enter through the East Gate, visit Ruiguang Pagoda, then follow the central route through Sirui Hall and Lijing Tower before reaching the water-and-land gates and the old bridge area, leaving through the South Gate. If the night programme is operating, follow the lit corridor and the area around the water stage; performance times and content depend on the day and should not be promised in advance.
Get there
Metro and buses
Take Metro Line 4 or 5 to Nanmen Station (南门), Exit 3, and walk about 8 minutes to the East Gate. Bus routes Tour 2, Tour 5 and 39 stop at Panmen Scenic Area North, followed by a walk into the scenic area.
Parking and canal movement
The scenic area has a parking lot, and nearby options include 69 Ge Parking Lot and Nanmen Road Transfer Parking Lot. Check spaces in advance during holidays; after the visit, you can walk to Xinshi Bridge Wharf or nearby gardens, but boats and other attractions use separate tickets.
Know before you go
Pagoda stairs and summer conditions
The wooden stairs in Ruiguang Pagoda are narrow and steep, so people going up and down need to make room for each other; older visitors, children and people afraid of heights should not force the climb. The scenic area is beside the water and can have many mosquitoes in summer, so bring repellent and adjust time around the pagoda and water according to your energy.
Night activities and repair work
Night admission, light shows, iron-flower performances and other events depend on the season, date and conditions; day admission does not include every night activity. Wuxiang Shrine may be closed for repairs, so follow the areas open that day; Master of the Nets Garden, Canglang Pavilion and a Grand Canal boat ride can be separate follow-up stops.
