Plan at a glance
A modern district built in a historic style
Luanzhou Ancient City (滦州古城) is in the area around Luanhe Road (滦河路) in Luanzhou (滦州市). Development of the current district began around 2010, with architecture mainly in Ming and Qing styles and elements of Khitan culture. Yinghui Gate (迎晖门) on the east side, the Qinglong River (青龙河) and the Zijin Pagoda (紫金塔) form the main walking area.
The city gates are currently free to enter and no reservation is required. There are no shared opening hours for all the shops: restaurants, boat rides and activities each operate on their own schedules. For night views, an evening visit is more rewarding than a weekday daytime visit.
The pagoda, boat rides and activities cost extra
Admission to the Zijin Pagoda is about RMB 20. Qinglong River cruises run during the day and at night; check the notices on site for night-cruise times and departures. Shadow-puppet demonstrations and other intangible cultural heritage activities do not follow a fixed major-show schedule; ask a shop or service point when you arrive.

Choose your visit
Yinghui Gate and the main street
Yinghui Gate at the eastern entrance is a landmark of the old-style district, with “Luanzhou” carved above the gate. Walk along the main street from the gate to see gray-tiled, brick-built lanes in an old style and the activities along the street.
The Zijin Pagoda for architecture and river views
The Zijin Pagoda is a place to see the district and surrounding waterways from above, and can also be a sunset viewpoint. Entry costs extra; check on site whether it is open and whether visitor numbers are limited that day.
Qinglong River and the stone bridge at night
The Qinglong River runs through the district. Its stone bridge and illuminated banks make a pleasant walk and photo stop, and you can also take a cruise. A night cruise is a good way to see the riverside lights, but departures vary by day.
Shadow puppetry and street culture
Luanzhou is associated with Pingju opera (评剧) and Luanzhou shadow puppetry (滦州皮影). You may find a shadow-puppet demonstration or interactive experience in the district. Activities depend on each shop’s schedule for the day, so do not plan around a fixed showtime.
Build your day
A 1.5–2-hour walking route
Enter from the East-side Parking Lot (东侧停车场) or Yinghui Gate, walk along the main street to the Zijin Pagoda, then return along the Qinglong River. The route focuses on the main street, pagoda and riverfront and suits a quick look at the architecture and waterside lanes. Decide whether to go up the pagoda based on its opening status and the extra ticket price.
A 3–4-hour evening route
Enter through the east gate in the evening and start with the main street and snack street. If the Zijin Pagoda is open and the timing works, go up for sunset; if it is closed or the timing does not work, continue along the Qinglong River to the stone bridge for night views. If you want a cruise or shadow-puppet demonstration, adjust your stops to that day’s schedule.
Plan each activity separately
The walking streets can be explored from east to west, with the main areas connected on foot. The pagoda, cruises and in-shop activities each require a separate ticket or queue. If you want a boat ride or shadow-puppet show, adjust your time on site to the day’s schedule.
Get there
Navigate to the east parking lot
For driving, set your destination to “Luanzhou Ancient City East Parking Lot” (滦州古城东侧停车场) or “Yinghui Gate.” Parking for a standard car is listed at about RMB 10 per day. Check the parking lot notice for available spaces, fees and holiday arrangements.
Driving from Beijing (北京) is about 200 km and takes roughly 2.5–3 hours; follow your navigation for the day’s route. The main street in the old-style district is pedestrian-only, so park and continue on foot.
The railway stations and the old city
High-speed trains serve Luanhe Station (滦河站), about 10 km from the district and roughly 30 minutes away by taxi. Luanzhou Station (滦州站) is the older station and is closer. Bus and taxi services after leaving either station are not consistent, so confirm how to get a ride and return before arriving.
Know before you go
Shop hours vary by date
The city gates are free to enter, but shops and activities each keep their own hours. Weekday daytime visits may be quiet, and some businesses may close in winter. If you want snacks, shadow puppetry or night views, check what is open that day.
Check prices and schedules separately
Cruises, shadow-puppet demonstrations and interactive activities may change their prices and times; check the day’s notices before paying or joining. For a full meal, you can choose a restaurant outside the district. Snacks are also available inside; choose a shop that is open.
Photos and walking
Yinghui Gate, the Qinglong River stone bridge, the Zijin Pagoda and the illuminated riverfront are the main photo spots. Most streets are pedestrian-only, so an evening walk can take in the gate, riverbank and pagoda after the lights come on.
