Visit South Lake Ecological Park (南湖生态公园)

Tangshan Nanhu–Kailuan Scenic Area (唐山南湖开滦风景区) consists of two parts: South Lake Ecological Park and Kailuan National Mine Park (开滦国家矿山公园). They operate separately. South Lake is for lake views, gardens and evening fountain shows; Kailuan has a separate entrance and ticket, so plan it as a separate visit.

Reference hours for the South Lake area are 06:00–22:00, with last entry at 21:30. Entry is currently free and no reservation is required. Some attractions, including Wanxiang Forest Pavilion (万象森林馆) and boat rides, charge separately; check the park’s notice for the day before setting out.

Choose a gate based on what you want to see

The World Expo Square Gate (世园广场门) is convenient for Danfeng Chaoyang (丹凤朝阳) and the musical fountain show (音乐水舞秀); Phoenix Terrace Gate (凤凰台门) is near the International Garden (国际园) and Jiangnan Garden (江南园). The Botanical Hall Gate (植物风情馆门) is close to Wanxiang Forest Pavilion and Hupan Shanyu (湖畔山语). The Visitor Center Gate (游客中心门) offers information, luggage storage and access to a large parking lot, while Peach Blossom Pond Gate (桃花潭门) is convenient for family activities and boat rides.

Allow 2–5 hours

Allow 2–3 hours for the landmark and garden highlights. If you want to add Wanxiang Forest Pavilion, Peach Blossom Pond (桃花潭) and Hupanli (湖畔里), allow 4–5 hours. The park covers a large area; consider a sightseeing bus or shared e-bike if you have a lot of ground to cover on foot.

Tickets and visit details

View visit options for this attraction and confirm the visit date and current arrangements before you go.

Choose your visit

Danfeng Chaoyang and the view from Longshan (龙山)

Danfeng Chaoyang is a landmark of South Lake. From the front of the plaza, you can photograph the full sculpture; from Longshan, you can frame the lake, landmark and city skyline together. The top of Longshan is a good place to watch the light around sunset, with views changing from day to night if you climb in the afternoon.

Garden architecture in the International Garden

The International Garden and Jiangnan Garden suit visitors interested in gardens, architecture and portrait photography. There are sculptures and fountains near the Italy Pavilion (意大利馆), while the Sweden Pavilion (瑞典馆) and France Pavilion (法国馆) offer classical architectural details. Opening arrangements for individual pavilions depend on the day.

Wanxiang Forest Pavilion and Peach Blossom Pond

Wanxiang Forest Pavilion is an indoor tropical plant hall where you can take a break between outdoor walks. The spiral staircase and plant displays also make good photo backgrounds. Peach Blossom Pond has boat rides and is a family-friendly stop; tickets cost extra, and you can check the pier and departure times when you arrive.

The evening fountain show and Hupanli

The musical fountain show is usually scheduled for around 20:30 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays and lasts about 15–20 minutes. Weather and events may affect the performance. Hupanli has places to eat or rest in the evening, making it a convenient way to extend your visit.

Build your day

A 2–3-hour landmark route

Enter through the World Expo Square Gate and start at Danfeng Chaoyang. If the sightseeing-bus route covers the area near Longshan that day, take it there and climb the hill, then continue to the International Garden for photos and return by following on-site directions. Sightseeing-bus prices and the number of rides allowed may vary on holidays; check the day’s rules when buying a ticket.

A 4–5-hour lake-and-garden route

From the World Expo Square Gate, visit Danfeng Chaoyang, Longshan, Wanxiang Forest Pavilion and the International Garden in that order, then continue to Peach Blossom Pond. In the evening, dine or take a break at Hupanli. The boat ride at Peach Blossom Pond is optional; you can still spend time by the water without taking a boat.

Visit Kailuan as a separate outing

If you want to see the underground mine experience and industrial-history exhibits, plan a separate visit to Kailuan National Mine Park. It is at 54 Xinhua East Road (新华东道), operates separately from the South Lake gates and has its own admission. You can visit in the afternoon after South Lake or on another day; see the separate mine-park page for tickets and closing information, and check the day’s notice.

Get there

From Tangshan Railway Station (唐山站) or the airport

From Tangshan Railway Station, check Tourist Bus 5 (游5路) or Bus 84 (84路) to the South Lake area. From Tangshan Sannühe Airport (唐山三女河机场), look for an airport shuttle or take a taxi. Bus stops, service times and the entrance to use after getting off depend on the route operating that day.

Navigate to the right gate and get around

For Danfeng Chaoyang or the fountain show, navigate to “World Expo Square Gate.” For the plant hall, use “Botanical Hall Gate”; for information, luggage storage or parking, use “Visitor Center Gate.” Shared e-bikes are available for hourly rental. You can also ask whether the sightseeing bus crosses between areas that day.

Know before you go

Fountain shows and other attractions

Weather, maintenance and event schedules affect whether the musical fountain show takes place; follow the park’s notice for that evening. The plant hall, boat rides and other attractions charge separately and keep different hours, so check before buying tickets.

Sightseeing buses, boats and walking distances

Sightseeing-bus tickets are about RMB 30 per person. Rides are usually unlimited on weekdays, while holiday tickets generally cover one ride. Boat rides start at about RMB 30. Rules and prices can change, so confirm the number of rides, stops and boat times when buying tickets. The park is large, and walking everywhere takes more effort.

Tangshan Banquet and Kailuan operate separately

Tangshan Banquet (唐山宴) is about 1 km from South Lake and can be a separate stop for snacks or an indoor break. It has its own entrance and operating hours. Kailuan National Mine Park also operates and sells tickets separately: free entry to South Lake does not include admission to the mine park. For Kailuan, navigate to the entrance on the 54 Xinhua East Road side.
