Location and basics
Tuo Mountain Scenic Area is in Wangjiazhuang Village in Qingzhou’s Yunmen Mountain subdistrict. The main entrance is at the stone archway at the foot of the mountain. Drivers can navigate to “Tuo Mountain Scenic Area,” which has free parking near the entrance; a taxi from Qingzhou Station takes about 20–30 minutes.
The adult ticket is approximately CNY 40–50. Advance booking is usually not required, and tickets can be bought on site or online. Reference hours are 05:30–18:00. Allow 40–60 minutes for the mid-mountain grottoes, or about 2 hours if you continue to the summit and descend on the other side.
Walking effort
The main attractions are the grottoes halfway up the mountain and the Taoist buildings at the summit. There are no internal vehicles; the entire route uses stone steps, with some steep sections. Visitors with limited stamina can visit the grottoes and return by the same route.

Tuo Mountain Grottoes
The grottoes contain 638 sculptures dating from the Northern Zhou through the Tang dynasty. The Amitabha Buddha in Cave 3 is nearly 7 metres high and the first sculpture to prioritize. Iron gates and wire barriers protect the grottoes, so viewing distance and photography angles are limited by the protection facilities.
Haotian Palace and the Buddha Viewing Platform
With enough stamina, continue to Haotian Palace and Qibao Pavilion at the summit, then descend toward Dongtian Gate. The Buddha Viewing Platform halfway up looks toward a reclining-Buddha outline formed by the opposite mountain, making it a useful choice between a grotto-only visit and the summit route.
Tuo Mountain suits visitors interested in grotto art, religious sculpture and historic buildings, as well as hikers with some mountain experience. The short route is the better choice for an easier visit; the steps and limited supplies make it unlike a flat city park.
Build your day
40–60-minute grotto route
Enter through the stone archway, follow the main trail up to the mid-mountain grottoes, view the five caves and return by the same route. Even this short route includes a steep section, so it is not a level walk.
Afternoon light can be better for viewing the grottoes. Keep the protection railings and gates out of the way when taking photos, and remain outside the wire barriers.
About 2 hours for the grottoes and summit
Climb from the entrance to the grottoes, then continue through the steepest section and South Heaven Gate to Haotian Palace and Qibao Pavilion. Descend on the Dongtian Gate side and return to the entrance.
This route is longer than the out-and-back grotto route and includes repeated climbs and descents. If your knees or energy already feel strained at the grottoes, return by the original route instead of continuing to the summit.
Get there
Arrival and transfers
Drive to Tuo Mountain Scenic Area; free parking is available near the entrance. Public transport connections are limited, so a direct taxi from Qingzhou Station or Qingzhou city is usually simpler. There is no cable car or sightseeing vehicle to replace the mountain trail.
Combining with Yunmen Mountain
Tuo Mountain faces Yunmen Mountain, but the two are separate ticketed mountain visits. If you plan both on one day, calculate parking, entry and walking time for each site separately.
Know before you go
Steps, water and company
The route is all stone steps, with steep sections that require a slower descent. Sales points on the mountain are very limited; apart from possible bottled water at the summit, bring enough drinking water and snacks. Some sections have few visitors, so exploring with a companion is safer.
Protecting the grottoes
Iron gates and wire barriers protect the sculptures. Do not cross them, touch the carvings or move close to the gates for a photo. The visit is about seeing the grotto group, Cave 3 and the Buddha Viewing Platform in context. Reference hours are 05:30–18:00; an early start leaves more time for the summit route.
