Confirm the road status before leaving
The road from Gongga Mountain Town / Shangmuju toward the pass is rough and may be affected by repairs, temporary controls, snow, or local management.
Tip:Ask about current road access before committing if your car is not a high-clearance vehicle.

Use a suitable vehicle or local transfer
A high-clearance SUV or local vehicle is the safer choice. Motorbike or truck transfers may be offered locally when the road is rough.
Tip:Agree on price, return time, and pickup point before going up.

Arrive before the light you want
For sunset over Gongga, build in time for road delays and altitude adjustment. The pass is around 4,500 m.
Tip:If cloud blocks Mount Gongga, the pass becomes a difficult drive with limited reward.

Descend with a safety margin
Leave before you are cold, dizzy, or stuck behind the last group of vehicles. The return road is harder in darkness.
Tip:Avoid this stop with young children, older travelers, or anyone already feeling altitude symptoms.
