Travel from Xining to Huangyuan by bus, self-drive, taxi, or private car
Bus 702 runs from the Xining Railway Station area toward Huangyuan; driving usually takes around 1 hour, while the bus journey also requires time for waiting and getting into town.
Tip:If you are continuing toward Riyue Mountain or Qinghai Lake on the same day, self-driving or a private car gives you more control over the schedule.

Use Ming-Qing Old Street as your walking arrival point
The public streets of the old town are free to enter; do not treat the town as a closed attraction with one gate, one timetable, or one shared admission ticket. Individual courtyards and exhibition spaces, including the City God Temple and former administrative office, may charge separately.
Tip:Confirm the access and ticket arrangement for each place you want to enter before setting out on the walk.

Walk east to west through the historic core
Start at the East Gate, then follow the main street through Huozu Pavilion, the Confucian Temple, Danggar Administrative Office, Renji Trading House, the City God Temple, and finish at Gonghai Gate. Allow around 2-3 hours including courtyard visits.
Tip:The district is compact, but the route takes longer if you enter several individual sites.

Choose your timing around light, weather, and the return journey
Morning or an earlier afternoon is best for architectural details; near evening, Gonghai Gate is a good place to see the gate against the distant hills.
Tip:Plateau sun, wind, and temperature changes still affect comfort, and bus travelers should not leave the last return service too tight.
