How to Visit
1

Choose a lower trailhead or a higher drop-off point according to your fitness.

From central Xining, take a taxi to Nanshan Park, Phoenix Terrace, or a lower walking starting point; access differs by entrance and road, so do not treat one location as the only entrance.

Tip:Start early enough in daylight to allow for the ascent, viewpoints, and descent. If going directly to a higher point, confirm where the vehicle can actually reach.
2

Follow marked paths in stages toward the viewpoints.

When starting from below, use public trails with railings, lighting, or clear signs, then progress through the wooded ascent, the Phoenix Terrace area, and the viewpoints. Allow about 1-2 hours, depending on fitness.

Tip:The route includes slopes and steps, so it is not suitable for visitors who rely on a wheelchair or cannot manage sustained uphill walking. Do not use narrow, empty, or unmarked shortcuts.
3

Choose the viewing time around weather and visibility.

Clear daytime conditions are best for broad city views; for sunset, reach the viewing area early and allow enough time to descend.

Tip:Strong ultraviolet light, cloud, rain, and wind all affect the experience. Bring sun protection and an extra warm layer even in summer.
4

Descend before dark by the main route or the route you used to arrive.

After viewing, leave by a familiar main route and arrange a taxi from a main road or planned drop-off point; carry water and slow down if needed on the descent.

Tip:Steps and slopes can become slippery after rain or snow. Wind, cold, and altitude discomfort add risk; if you develop headache, marked breathlessness, or dizziness, stop ascending and head down promptly.
Highlights
  • Phoenix Terrace and nearby viewpoints overlooking the city.
  • A hill walk close to the urban center.
  • Different city views in clear daytime conditions and around sunset.
  • A choice between a full uphill walk and a shorter stop at a higher point.
Insider Tips

Do not judge the effort only by map distance; Nanshan's slopes and steps make the walk more demanding.

At this altitude and in dry conditions, carry water and keep a measured pace even on a short ascent.

Plan sunset only if you can descend safely; do not stay on unlit side trails for night views.

If rain, flood controls, snow, or strong winds are expected, replace the hill walk with a city activity.

For an easier city panorama in clear weather, Plateau Pearl Sightseeing Tower avoids the uphill walk but does not offer the same outdoor trail experience.
