How to Visit
1

Travel to the museum and arrive early

Take a taxi from central Xining to Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum, No. 36 Jing'er Road. There is no direct metro. If using buses, follow a map app to a stop in the biotechnology industrial park, then walk to the museum's South Hall entrance. Arrive between 09:00 and 10:30 to allow time for tickets and security.

Tip:The South Hall and North Hall are separate visiting areas. Confirm the South Hall ticket and entry point first, then locate the North Hall entrance.
2

Handle tickets, reservation questions, and entry

Bring your original passport, enter the South Hall first, and then decide whether to visit the North Hall. The planning information currently available lists South Hall adult admission as CNY 60 and North Hall admission as free. From 16 April to 15 October, hours are listed as 09:00-18:00 with last entry at 17:30; from 16 October to 15 April, they are listed as 09:00-17:30 with last entry at 17:00. Ticketing requires real-name identification; it is not yet reliably confirmed whether foreign passports require manual registration or advance reservation.

Tip:Allow time for security and document checks. Ask about the free luggage-storage service before entering if you have large bags.
3

Visit the South Hall and North Hall in order

Start on the fourth floor of the South Hall, then work down through floors three, two, and one; visit the North Hall if you still have time and energy. Begin with the 618-metre Painted Thangka Panorama on floor four, then continue through the Silk Road and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau civilisation, architecture, calligraphy, and costume galleries. The North Hall focuses on Tibetan medicine, medical thangkas, and medicinal specimens. Allow 3-4 hours for the South Hall and another 1-1.5 hours for the North Hall.

Tip:If you have only half a day, prioritise the South Hall. This is a content-heavy cultural stop, not a quick photo visit.
4

Manage restrictions and continue your day

Check the remaining time before closing and follow the photography signs in each gallery. Photography is generally permitted without flash, but some cases and artefact areas may prohibit it. Ask on arrival about guided tours or audio devices if you want more context.

Tip:Do not leave South Hall entry until after 17:30. Temporary exhibitions, reservations, and document rules can change, so treat the North Hall as the flexible part of an afternoon visit.
Highlights
  • The Painted Thangka Panorama on floor four is the main reason to begin the visit upstairs.
  • A top-down route through the South Hall avoids unnecessary backtracking.
  • The Tibetan costume galleries show regional differences in materials, decoration, and dress.
  • The North Hall adds context through Tibetan medicine, medical thangkas, tools, and medicinal specimens.
  • The museum rewards visitors who are willing to read labels or use a guide.
Insider Tips

Bring your original passport; do not rely only on a photo or digital copy.

See the Painted Thangka Panorama first, then decide how closely to explore the remaining floors.

Wear comfortable shoes and carry water or a small snack; the galleries involve substantial walking.

Ask about guide availability soon after entering, as suitable sessions may not be available near closing time.

Allow at least three hours for the South Hall if you have other plans that day.

For a broader history-focused museum day, pair this with Qinghai Provincial Museum only when you have enough time for two substantial indoor visits.
