Plan at a glance
Location and trip planning
Yaowan Ancient Town is on Piyao Line in Xinyi City, Xuzhou, where the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal meets Luoma Lake. It is about a 1.5-hour drive from central Xuzhou and works best as a separate day trip or as part of an overnight stay in Xinyi. It does not fit naturally into the same central-city walking route as Yunlong Lake and Xuzhou Museum.
The town is open 08:00–18:00. The main ticket costs CNY 60 and includes more than ten exhibition buildings, including Wu Family Mansion, Zhao Xinlong Sauce Garden and the Folk History Museum. Ordinary visits are generally handled through on-site or online-platform ticketing rather than mandatory advance reservation. The online claim that entry is free before 09:00 should not guide your plan; treat Yaowan as a paid attraction.
How much time to allow
Walking the main street and several representative buildings takes about 1–2 hours. For a first visit with sunset at the South Pier, allow 3–4 hours. A night boat, the “Liang Hongyu” performance, fireworks and the iron-flower show may follow that day's or holiday schedule. Check the programme before deciding whether to stay into the evening.

Wu Family Mansion
Wu Family Mansion is a Qing-period residence that rewards a slow look. Brick carving, courtyard layout and the scale of the rooms are the main details. Visitors interested in traditional buildings can place it in the first half of the route after entering through the North Gate, then continue south along West Street.
Zhao Xinlong Sauce Garden and the Folk History Museum
Zhao Xinlong Sauce Garden retains displays of sauce jars, workshop spaces and local craft traditions. It helps explain the town's commercial and everyday life. The Folk History Museum and other buildings add local history; the main ticket covers more than ten buildings, but you should choose your stopping time according to your interests.
The South Pier and the walking scenery
The South Pier is close to Luoma Lake and is the main place for water views and sunset. The North Gate is the more practical starting point for a regular sightseeing route. West Street, stone lanes, old door frames and walls marked with “Yaowan” make the town suitable for a slow walk; boats and the small train are optional paid transport.
Who this suits
Yaowan suits visitors who enjoy historic streets, canal culture and a slower walking pace. It also works for friends, couples and families. The experience is spread across streets, courtyards and the waterfront, so a ten-minute photo stop will not show much of the town; families should allow time for walking, food and waiting for any activity.
Build your day
A one- to two-hour quick route
Enter through the North Gate and follow West Street. Visit Wu Family Mansion, Zhao Xinlong Sauce Garden and the Folk History Museum in sequence, then finish with a short look at the canal from the South Pier. This route focuses on the main street and representative buildings and suits visitors who need to return to Xinyi the same day.
A three- to four-hour complete route
Enter through the North Gate and move south along West Street, visiting Wu Family Mansion, Zhao Xinlong Sauce Garden and the Folk History Museum before going to the South Pier for sunset. If a night boat or another evening activity is running that day, decide after sunset whether to stay, then return through the town streets. Whether to add the night visit depends on the actual schedule that day.
Performances and evening activities
The “Liang Hongyu” horse-war performance is usually scheduled after 17:00. Holidays may also bring fireworks and the traditional iron-flower show. Performance time, whether an event runs and the available seating can change on the day, so arrive early and include queuing time if you plan to watch.
Get there
From Xuzhou or Xinyi
By public transport, take a high-speed train to Xinyi Station and transfer to the tourist line for Yaowan. Driving from central Xuzhou takes about 1.5 hours. When navigating to the North Gate or car park, confirm that the destination is in Xinyi City rather than planning it as a central-Xuzhou attraction.
The two gates
The North Gate is the usual starting point for regular visitors and groups, with direct access to West Street and the main exhibition buildings. The South Gate is close to Luoma Lake and the South Pier, making it useful for sunset. Starting at the South Gate changes the order of the main street buildings and the return route.
Moving inside the town
The main street and exhibition buildings are mainly explored on foot. Boats and the small train are optional paid transport. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time for stone lanes, building visits and waiting at the South Pier; the paid transport covers only part of the movement, so the main streets still require walking.
Know before you go
Tickets and concessions
The main ticket costs CNY 60 and includes Wu Family Mansion, Zhao Xinlong Sauce Garden, the Folk History Museum and more than ten other exhibition buildings. Visitors aged 60 or above, children under 1.4 metres and active-duty military personnel, among others, may qualify for free entry under the applicable rules. Students with a student card can receive half-price admission. Bring the relevant documents when buying a ticket or entering.
Hours, queues and weather
The town is open 08:00–18:00. Popular buildings and the “Liang Hongyu” performance may have queues on holidays. Arrive early if you want a good place for the performance. Weekdays are usually better for quiet street scenes than weekends. In summer and around sunset, wear walking shoes and carry water.
Food and local products
The quality of shops and restaurants inside the town varies. Choose according to the day's crowd and which businesses are open. Yaowan chaopai, a local baked snack, is a useful snack to try, while Yaowan sweet oil is a local product that works as a small souvenir. Restaurants serving local fish dishes can be found near the South Gate; opening hours and prices should be confirmed when you arrive.
Pets and parking
Pet management in the public areas is inconsistent, and pets may be stopped at entrances or inside the town. Bringing a pet is not recommended. The town has a large car park with relatively good capacity. Drivers should still include parking, the walk into the town and the return trip in the plan; if you stay overnight in Xinyi, confirm the accommodation's parking arrangement separately.
A next-day connection
Maling Mountain Scenic Area can work as the mountain-and-water part of a second day, creating a two-day route with Yaowan. It is not a practical short stop to add after a same-day round trip from central Xuzhou.
