Location, tickets, and hours

The Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum is on Songkang Avenue beside Shili Silver Beach. The usual entrance is the first-floor ticket gate. The adult ticket is CNY 70, and the student and concession ticket is CNY 35. You can buy online or at the museum. Parking arrangements, discounts, and visitor services may change on the day, so do not rely on an old promotion or a fixed talk schedule.

The museum is open 09:00–17:30, with last entry at 17:00. It normally closes on Mondays except public holidays. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the main galleries, or 2.5–3 hours if you want a fuller visit and a walk along Shili Silver Beach afterwards.

What to expect from the shipwreck display

The museum focuses on the Nanhai I shipwreck and the objects recovered from it, so the visit is broader than seeing the hull itself. Protection work may leave the ship area partly covered by scaffolding, pipes, or barriers, affecting close views. Treat the archaeology, conservation displays, and object galleries as part of the main visit.

Shipwreck, ceramics, and underwater archaeology

The first floor introduces the underwater excavation and the “Crystal Palace” shipwreck display. On the second floor, look at ceramics, metalware, and the reconstructed shipboard living spaces, then continue to the key objects on the third floor. Dehua white porcelain, Jingdezhen celadon, gold and silver objects, and ironware show the range of cargo; these galleries remain worthwhile even if part of the hull is obscured.

The museum also explains underwater archaeology and the desalination and drying of recovered objects. It suits families and visitors interested in how archaeology is done. If you have limited time, focus on the shipwreck display and the main second-floor cases instead of trying to read every label.

Who it suits and what to combine

The museum is a good fit for visitors interested in history, archaeology, and maritime trade, and for a cool indoor break on a hot day. Shili Silver Beach is next door, so the two can be combined. The beach is weather-dependent, while the museum has a last-entry time and a weekly closing day.

Build your day

A focused 1.5–2 hour route

Start on the first floor with the underwater archaeology introduction and shipwreck display. Continue to the second-floor ceramics, metalware, and shipboard-life areas, then finish with the key cases on the third floor. You can stop briefly at the shop or exit without retracing the galleries.

If you also plan to visit Shili Silver Beach, arrive by 15:00 and leave time for security, ticketing, and the walk between the two stops. The exhibition route is long; with children, pause between the first and second floors rather than rushing through the final galleries.

A half-day combination

On a hot day, enter the museum in the morning or early afternoon, then walk along Shili Silver Beach after the visit. If the ship is partly hidden by conservation work, spend more time with the second- and third-floor objects and archaeology displays instead of waiting for a clear view through the barriers.

If you want to add Dajiao Bay or a meal in Zhapo, treat the museum as the time-sensitive stop and arrange the beach or dinner afterwards. Do not make a completely unobstructed ship view, a temporary talk, or a particular water activity the only reason for the day’s route.

Get there

High-speed rail and island transport

A taxi from Yangjiang Station usually takes about 40 minutes. From a hotel near Shili Silver Beach, Zhapo, or another island base, a taxi is straightforward. If you rent an electric two-wheeler, check the return range and weather before setting off; do not begin a long ride late in the day.

Driving and the entrance

Drive to “Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum” and enter through the main gate. The museum has a parking area. Any parking discount or validation depends on the day’s signs or service-desk instructions, so keep the ticket or receipt you may need before leaving the car.

Know before you go

Closing day, construction, and pace

Monday closure is the easiest mistake to make; public-holiday opening follows the day’s announcement. On arrival, check the shipwreck area, temporary barriers, and open floors. Follow staff directions around construction; a reduced view in one area does not make the whole museum unavailable.

The air conditioning is strong, so a light jacket is useful in summer. If you want a guided talk or an audio guide, ask whether it is available that day and how it works. Do not wait for a service slot if it would cut into your normal gallery time.

Photography, breaks, and optional spending

Follow gallery instructions when taking photos and avoid stopping in narrow passages. Souvenirs and food are optional; choose them according to your time and budget. If you continue to Shili Silver Beach after leaving, drink water and prepare for strong coastal sun.
