What this experience is

The Three Gorges Ship Lift raises vessels vertically in a carrying chamber. It is a different facility from the Gezhouba ship locks. Visitors must buy the relevant boat ticket and board at the specified pier for a particular departure; arriving at the Three Gorges Dam does not let you walk into an ordinary exhibition hall and join the experience.

Adult tickets are about CNY 168–198, commonly found on travel platforms or in Two Dams and One Gorge packages. Check the ticket type and confirmation at least 1–2 days ahead when possible. The lift has no fixed timetable that can be applied to every product: 11:00 and 14:00 are example departure times; the actual departure depends on the booking and the day's dispatch.

How much time to allow

The core lift and onboard experience takes about 1.5 hours. A dedicated arrangement including pier connections takes about 2 hours, so do not estimate the visit from the chamber's operating time alone. If you combine Tanziling, the 185 Platform, and the ship lift in one day, allow about 4–5 hours before adding road time between piers.

Choose your visit

Watch the engineering in operation

The main experience is watching a vessel enter the carrying chamber and rise vertically. Each lift takes about 10 minutes, allowing you to see the change in water level, the vessel being raised, and the chamber's internal structure. The system can carry vessels in the 3,000-ton class, making it a good fit for visitors interested in major engineering, family-friendly learning, or photography.

Ship lift or dam visit?

If the main goal is the vertical lift on board, choose a dedicated ship-lift product or a departure that includes it. If you want to view the dam from land, arrange the Three Gorges Dam Visitor Transfer Center, Tanziling, and the 185 Platform separately. The dam's CNY 35 shuttle ticket and the ship-lift ticket are separate charges; neither replaces the other experience.

Build your day

Dedicated ship-lift route

Reach the boarding pier named on the booking — for example, Sandouping, Taipingxi, or Maoping — then complete ticket checks, boarding, and the carrying-chamber experience before landing at the other pier shown on the confirmation. The dedicated route takes about 2 hours, but the landing point may not be the original pier, so check the endpoint before purchase.

Dam plus ship lift

You can start at the Three Gorges Dam Visitor Transfer Center, take the attraction bus to Tanziling and the 185 Platform, then travel to the specified pier for the ship-lift departure. This combination places an elevated land view, a level dam view, and the on-water lift in one day; the dam shuttle route and pier transfer are separate parts of the plan.

Return arrangements

After landing, you may need to return to Yichang from Taipingxi, Maoping, or another endpoint. The exact connection depends on the product. If you buy a one-way experience, confirm the landing pier, included transfer, and return pickup point before payment; do not assume a ride-hailing car can enter a controlled pier.

Get there

To the dam transfer center

If you are visiting the dam on land first, use “Three Gorges Dam Visitor Transfer Center” as the navigation target. Drivers may need to obtain a vehicle access pass at checkpoints such as Fengjiawan or Zhujiawan, then park and transfer as directed. Ride-hailing cars generally reach the transfer center rather than the core dam area.

To the specific boarding pier

The boarding pier printed on the ship-lift ticket takes priority over the attraction name. Sandouping, Taipingxi, and Maoping are not interchangeable. When driving or taking a taxi, check the pier, meeting time, and final road segment against the confirmation; a controlled pier may not allow ordinary vehicles to enter, so follow the arrival and transfer instructions on the booking.

Know before you go

Departures and waiting

Ship-lift departures can change because of maintenance, water level, weather, or dispatch. 11:00 and 14:00 are sample departures rather than a fixed schedule. The onboard experience itself takes about 1.5 hours, although queues may make the total visit longer. After purchase, follow the day's notice and on-site guidance.

Tickets and extra charges

The ship-lift ticket, the dam-area shuttle ticket, and any other seat or onboard service are separate charges. Overseas visitors should carry the original passport and confirm the real-name procedure before purchase; a passport cannot automatically be handled through the Chinese resident ID-card scanning process. Parking is about CNY 10/day; the actual parking location and charge depend on the day's arrangement.

Weather and photography

Rain, fog, strong wind, and changing water levels can affect navigation or visibility. Photography must stay within the open areas and follow staff instructions. Views from inside the carrying chamber, the bow, or the stern depend on the departure and accessible areas, so a fixed viewpoint is not guaranteed on every trip.
