Entrance and tickets

Three Gorges Dam Tourism Area is in Sandouping Town, Yiling District, Yichang. The land visit starts at the Three Gorges Dam Visitor Transfer Center. The main admission ticket is free, but entering the core dam area requires the attraction bus; the shuttle ticket, about CNY 35, is also tied to the real-name entry process. Confirm the date, identity details, and passport procedure through the current booking channel before purchase.

A cautious planning frame is about 08:00–17:00. Some core areas may remain open until 18:00, while the Three Gorges Project Museum should be planned around its 17:00 closing time. To see the main viewpoints, allow at least 3–3.5 hours and avoid arriving at the transfer center late in the afternoon.

Who it suits

This visit suits travellers interested in major water-control infrastructure, those who want to see the dam from several elevations, and visitors who want to combine outdoor viewpoints with an indoor exhibition in hot or rainy weather. The Three Gorges Ship Lift is a separate experience with its own ticket and departure schedule, rather than a default part of the land visit to the dam.

Choose your visit

Three viewpoints

Tanziling is the high viewpoint over the dam and the five-step ship locks. The 185 Platform is close to the height of the dam body and works well for a more level view of the main structure and ship lift. Interception Memorial Park sits beside the river and offers a more open angle for photographing the whole dam. The three stops give you elevated, level, and riverside perspectives, so choose according to the day's photography priorities.

Learn about the project indoors

The Three Gorges Project Museum is a useful addition in hot or rainy weather, with exhibitions focused on the project's construction background and related displays. If photography is the priority, place Tanziling and Interception Memorial Park first. If you want more context, allow about 60 minutes for the museum, subject to the day's opening arrangement.

For a nearby cultural-heritage stop in Zigui, see Qu Yuan's Hometown Cultural Tourism Zone.

Build your day

Complete land route

Take the attraction bus from the visitor transfer center to Tanziling and begin with the elevated view of the dam and the five-step ship locks. Continue to the 185 Platform for a closer, level view of the dam body. Finish at Interception Memorial Park for a full-dam photograph from the riverbank, then take the bus back to the transfer center. The route takes about 3–3.5 hours; using the shuttle between named stops is more practical than trying to connect them on foot.

If time is limited

Keep Tanziling, the 185 Platform, and Interception Memorial Park as the priorities. In hot or rainy weather, add the indoor museum if it is open that day.

Get there

Reaching the transfer center

Use “Three Gorges Dam Visitor Transfer Center” as the navigation target for public transport or a ride-hailing car; vehicles cannot take visitors directly to the core dam area. Drivers must reach the checkpoint, follow the on-site process to obtain a vehicle access pass with the required driving documents, then park and transfer to the attraction bus as directed.

Returning to Yichang

After the visit, take the attraction bus back to the visitor transfer center, then transfer to a public bus or a dedicated vehicle to the Three Gorges Visitor Center. The dedicated vehicle costs about CNY 30. The dam-area shuttle only handles movement inside the attraction; confirm the city-bound bus or dedicated-vehicle schedule and pickup point separately.

Know before you go

Timing, documents, and weather

The Three Gorges Project Museum is closed on Mondays, so avoid that day if the indoor visit is important. Seasonal and holiday arrangements may change opening, stop-entry, and shuttle operations. Overseas visitors should carry the original passport and confirm the real-name entry channel before purchase; do not prepare only for the Chinese resident ID-card process.

Walking, photography, and spending

The attraction bus connects Tanziling, the 185 Platform, and Interception Memorial Park, but each stop still involves walking. In rain or high heat, the museum can serve as an indoor break. A long lens works well at Tanziling for compressing the dam and ship locks in one frame; the open riverbank at Interception Memorial Park is better for the dam and river. Whether flood discharge is visible depends on the day's operation and cannot be guaranteed by month.

Nearby combinations

Tribe of the Three Gorges and the G348 Three Gorges Highway can be added separately to a Yichang itinerary, but they are not part of the Three Gorges Dam Tourism Area.
