Plan at a glance

Understand the scope

“Yangtze River Three Gorges” describes a regional landscape of rivers, gorges, and major engineering works. It does not correspond to one all-in ticket or one unified visitor entrance. Yichang is better treated as a starting point for several options: a land visit to the dam, a water journey through Xiling Gorge, a village-and-gorge visit at Tribe of the Three Gorges, or a separately ticketed ship-lift departure.

The options range from half-day to full-day plans, but their departure points, ticket types, and return arrangements differ. Choose the main interest first, then connect transport and accommodation; do not treat several attraction names as one park.

Yichang departure anchors

Yichang East Railway Station, the Three Gorges Visitor Center, and several city tourism hubs have direct buses or tour services for related attractions. The dam uses the Three Gorges Dam Visitor Transfer Center, while Tribe of the Three Gorges uses Wangjiaping Visitor Center; the two entrances are different, and one city transfer arrangement cannot cover every route.

Choose your visit

For major engineering

Choose the land visit to the Three Gorges Dam for Tanziling's elevated view, the 185 Platform's dam-level view, and Interception Memorial Park's riverside view. It usually takes a half day, about 3.5–4 hours. The dam shuttle and real-name entry process are handled separately; free admission does not make every transport stage free.

For a gorge day on the water

Choose the Two Dams and One Gorge Cruise, which departs from central Yichang, travels through Xiling Gorge, and then transfers to the Three Gorges Dam. A complete product often takes about 7–8 hours. It suits visitors willing to spend the day on the boat, a possible lock-passing experience, and the dam land visit; check whether lunch and transfers are included.

For villages and streams

Choose Tribe of the Three Gorges, whose classic visit takes about 4–5 hours and includes Wangjiaping Visitor Center, the ferry, Bawangzhai, and Longjin Creek. Its shuttle, ferry, performances, and walking demands differ from the dam route, making it a better fit for visitors looking for gorge villages and Tujia culture.

For the lifting system

The Three Gorges Ship Lift requires its own ticket and a specific departure, and the experience takes place on the river. It cannot be added by walking in after arriving at the dam. It suits visitors who want to focus on large-scale engineering; if combined with the dam on the same day, confirm the pier, departure, and return from the landing point separately.

Build your day

Half-day dam route

Use the Three Gorges Dam Visitor Transfer Center as the land starting point, take the attraction shuttle through Tanziling, the 185 Platform, and Interception Memorial Park, then return to the transfer center. Allow about 3.5–4 hours. This works for an itinerary that also needs time to return to central Yichang or continue to another activity.

Full-day Two Dams and One Gorge route

Meet at the Three Gorges Visitor Center in the morning, travel by water to Sandouping, transfer to the Three Gorges Dam, complete the land viewpoints in the afternoon, and return to the city. This route already occupies most of the day; Tribe of the Three Gorges and the ship lift are not default same-day additions. Plan the piers, transfers, and return in separate stages.

Full-day Tribe of the Three Gorges route

Travel from the city to Wangjiaping Visitor Center and follow the product's ferry-in/vehicle-out or vehicle-in/ferry-out arrangement for the ferry, Bawangzhai, and Longjin Creek. The classic visit takes about 4–5 hours, but city travel and attraction transfers are additional. The dam and Tribe of the Three Gorges lie in different directions, so a same-day combination needs its own road-time and energy calculation.

Get there

From the city

Yichang East Railway Station and the Three Gorges Visitor Center are common meeting points for tourism routes; confirm the actual service with the product you choose. Drivers should navigate to the relevant visitor transfer center rather than searching only for the geographic name “Yangtze River Three Gorges.” The dam, Tribe of the Three Gorges, and water piers each have a different final approach.

Choosing the entrance

For the dam land visit, go first to the Three Gorges Dam Visitor Transfer Center. For Tribe of the Three Gorges, go to Wangjiaping Visitor Center. For Two Dams and One Gorge, follow the boarding order at the Three Gorges Visitor Center. Products may use Sandouping, Taipingxi, or Maoping, so arrange arrival and return from the confirmation.

Know before you go

Tickets and booking

There is no unified Yangtze Three Gorges ticket. Free admission, attraction shuttles, cruises, ferries, and ship-lift tickets are handled separately. The Three Gorges Dam uses real-name entry; complete the date, identity details, and document procedure through the current booking channel. Other attractions do not automatically follow the dam's rules.

Timing and changing operations

Departures, performances, temporary closures, water level, and weather all affect the day. Do not plan around a fixed departure or a promise to see every attraction in one day. Holiday queues may form at several visitor centers and piers; use the meeting time and return point in the order for full-day products.

Food, energy, and combinations

The dam and Tribe of the Three Gorges both involve outdoor walking and transfers, while onboard or attraction meals depend on the product. Tribe of the Three Gorges, the dam, the ship lift, and Xiling Gorge can be added separately, but each has its own entrance, ticket, and return plan. Plan them as separate routes rather than one ticket.
