Two ways to visit
Xiling Gorge Scenic Area works as two different half-day plans. Drive the G348 Three Gorges Highway and stop at legal viewpoints, or enter the paid Sanyou Cave area for cave scenery, historical traces, and a Xiling Gorge cruise. G348 itself is not covered by the attraction package, and buying a Sanyou Cave or cruise product does not automatically cover the whole road.
For timing, allow about 2–3 hours for a quick G348 viewpoint drive or a half day for Sanyou Cave with the cruise. The paid area can be planned around 08:30–17:30, with cruises currently running roughly between 09:30 and 16:30. Departures and temporary closures follow the day's arrangement.
Who it suits
Drivers and photographers can link several G348 viewpoints. Visitors who would rather spend less time driving and see the gorge from the river can choose the Sanyou Cave area. Public transport reaches the Sanyou Cave direction but runs infrequently and makes the return harder, so include the trip back to the city before entering the paid area.

G348 road scenery
The G348 experience is the gorge road and its changing viewpoints. Tingfenggu (听风谷) and Mingyuetai (明月台) can be placed in the viewing order, while Sanyou Cave can also be seen from the road. This option suits visitors who do not want the attraction package and prefer to stop flexibly according to weather and light; the main subjects are gorge depth and river views.
Sanyou Cave and the cruise
The Sanyou Cave area combines historical traces, cliff inscriptions, and a river cruise. It includes poetry associated with historical figures such as Bai Juyi and Su Shi. Whether the cruise passes a Gezhouba lock depends on the exact product; treat the water segment as a Xiling Gorge viewing experience, not a promise of a particular chamber or lock passage.
A name that is easy to confuse
“Xilingxia Shiwai Taoyuan Scenic Area (西陵峡世外桃源景区)” is not the same cruise product as the Sanyou Cave area, and a low-priced ticket may cover only one sub-area. When booking or navigating, check the product name, whether the cruise is included, and the actual pier so that different areas are not combined into one imaginary ticket.

Quick G348 route
Use the Sanyou Cave direction as the road starting area, then choose two or three legal viewpoints or parking areas along G348. A possible order is a distant view of Sanyou Cave, Tingfenggu (听风谷), and Mingyuetai (明月台). Allow about 2–3 hours; the number of stops depends on traffic, weather, and which parking points are open that day.
Land-and-water half-day route
Visit road viewpoints such as Mingyuetai (明月台) along G348 first, then navigate to the Sanyou Cave parking area and buy a product that includes the cruise before entering the paid area. Inside, follow the scenic-area arrangement for the cruise and cave visit. G348 road viewing is free; entering the paid Sanyou Cave area and taking the cruise are charged according to the product. Return by car or a pre-arranged vehicle.
Pace and return
Late afternoon can offer good gorge light, but the paid-area cruise and road viewpoints each have their own end times. Non-drivers should arrange a vehicle back to the city before entering the outskirts; buses are infrequent, and a last-minute taxi may be difficult to find. Reaching the attraction does not by itself solve the return trip.
Get there
Driving
From central Yichang, follow G348 toward Sanyou Cave and navigate separately to road viewpoints and the paid area. Follow road markings and designated areas for passing and parking. Slow down on narrow, winding sections such as Yingzuiyan (鹰嘴岩) and do not stop informally at the roadside.
Public transport
Bus 10 travels toward Sanyou Cave, but services are infrequent and the suburban return is unreliable. If you take the bus, check the attraction's last service and the vehicle back to the city together; when necessary, reserve a transfer or choose a product with return transport.
Paid-area entrance
For a paid visit, navigate to “Sanyou Cave Scenic Area” or “Xiling Gorge Scenic Area.” The actual cruise pier follows the ticket product and on-site guidance. Do not use a G348 viewpoint, the Sanyou Cave entrance, and Xilingxia Shiwai Taoyuan Scenic Area (西陵峡世外桃源景区) as interchangeable navigation endpoints.
Know before you go
Tickets and cruise departures
G348 is free. A Sanyou Cave plus cruise package is about CNY 108; lower-priced tickets such as CNY 55 or CNY 68 may cover only one sub-area. Cruise hours of about 09:30–16:30 and roughly hourly departures can change with season, water level, and visitor volume, so check whether the ticket includes the cruise.
Weather and roads
River water may change colour during flood season, and flooding, strong wind, or other operating conditions may alter the water activity or close part of the area. Gorge roads include narrow bends. Photograph only from a legal viewpoint or parking area; do not stop on G348 or cross the lane for a shot.
Food and return
Farmhouse restaurants and city-style food are available along the Sanyou Cave route. Non-drivers should settle the return trip first and then decide whether to stay for the late-afternoon road light; water products, the paid area, and the G348 return are separate arrangements.
