Site area and suggested visit time

Jinniushan Prehistoric Site is in Xitian Village, Yong’an Town, Dashiqiao. You can visit the site museum, the area near Point A, and the sculpture of Merck’s rhinoceros (梅氏犀雕塑) on the hill in one trip. A previous visitor account describes a quick visit completed in about 40 minutes; if you include time to read the museum displays, walk the hillside routes out and back, and stop at each location, allow 1–1.5 hours.

Tickets and museum hours

On-site visitor accounts from 2025–2026 describe free entry without reservations. Summer 2026 visitor information lists the museum as open free of charge from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Tuesday through Sunday and closed on Mondays. Visitor accounts also mention a break in service from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. There is no consistent current notice for the midday arrangement, last admission, or off-season hours; avoid arriving at midday and confirm that the site is open that day.

Point A Cave, where the Jinniushan human fossils were found

Point A is where human fossils known as “Jinniushan Man” were discovered in 1984. Liaoning cultural heritage information dates the remains to about 260,000 years ago; an August 2026 visitor account says visitors at the time could walk the hillside path to the area near Point A. Whether the cave interior is open to visitors depends on that day’s heritage-protection and access signs. Do not enter fenced-off areas or active archaeological work zones.

Fossils and traces of early life in the site museum

The exhibition hall displays paleontological fossils, stone tools, and traces of the use of fire, as well as a replica skull of “Jinniushan Man” and a reconstructed skeleton model. Exhibits may change; if you are visiting for a particular object, confirm what is on display that day before setting out.

Hillside paths and the sculpture of Merck’s rhinoceros

The hill has a sculpture of Merck’s rhinoceros, which can be combined with Point A and the exhibition hall in a short walking route. Reaching Point A involves a hillside path; reaching the sculpture involves steps through the woods. Accessible routes have not been confirmed.

Build your day

Walking route: museum, Point A, and rhinoceros sculpture

Start at the museum and allow about 15 minutes to see the displays. Walk about 20 m to the right, then take the hillside path on the left toward the area near Point A to see where the site is located; return to the museum area. From the wooded steps to the left of the museum, climb to the sculpture of Merck’s rhinoceros; it takes about 15 minutes to reach the summit, then return by the same route. This visit includes the museum, the hillside round trip near Point A, and the climb to the sculpture; allow 1–1.5 hours. These directions are based on an August 2026 visitor account. If paths have changed or the cave is closed, follow the access signs.

A short visit to the exhibition hall only

If you skip the hillside paths, allow about 20–30 minutes for the museum; the approximately 15-minute visit in an on-site account is a quick look. Allow more time if you plan to read the exhibit labels or join a guided tour. Visitor accounts from 2025–2026 mention a break in service from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm; avoid midday and confirm that the museum is open that day.

Get there

Bus and last-mile connection

From Dashiqiao Railway Station, check services on Dashiqiao Route 9 toward Boluopu Market and get off at Yong’an Road Junction. An August 2026 visitor account mentions taking a three-wheeled taxi from there to the site entrance, at a reference fare of about CNY 5. The same account gives a bus fare of about CNY 3 and a reference fare of about CNY 8 for a minibus toward Gaizhou. These are historical price references, not current fares. Before setting out, confirm whether Route 9 is running that day, whether a three-wheeled taxi is available at Yong’an Road Junction, and when the last return service leaves.

Driving and parking

Search for “大石桥市永安镇西田村金牛山遗址博物馆” (Jinniushan Site Museum, Xitian Village, Yong’an Town, Dashiqiao) as your navigation destination, then park according to the road signs at the entrance. There is roadside space near the entrance, but a large official car park, fees, and space availability have not been confirmed. Keep the village road clear when parking.

Know before you go

Leave time for the return trip

The last bus and minibus times have not been confirmed. An August 2026 visitor account recommends starting the return trip before 3:00 pm. If travelling by public transport, ask where to wait for the return service and what time the last one leaves when you arrive. The suggested time is not a fixed departure schedule.

Museum closures, paths, and on-site facilities

Museum hours and transport connections may change temporarily; confirm again on the day. If the museum door is closed, ask the staff in the office beside it whether it is receiving visitors that day. The routes to Point A and the hilltop include dirt paths, woodland paths, or steps; wear shoes suited to walking.

Museum facilities and visitor restrictions

Toilets, luggage storage, photography rules, and accessible facilities have not been confirmed. If you need any of these services, ask staff before entering. If you encounter a temporary closure or heritage-protection notice, adjust your route according to the signs on site.
