Qing-era coastal defence site

Construction of Xipaotai began in 1882 and was completed in 1888. It was a Qing-dynasty coastal defence site at the mouth of the Daliao River and is now a nationally protected cultural heritage site. Visitors interested in modern coastal defence history can focus on the main battery and the layout of the site.

Main battery, side batteries, and rammed-earth defences

The site includes one main battery and two side batteries, with sections of rammed-earth wall and a protective moat. The main camp gate and barracks have also been reconstructed, and replica iron cannons are on display. Together, the remains and reconstructed sections show the layout of Xipaotai’s coastal defences.

“Paotai Hun” and “Gulei Xionghun” exhibition halls

The site has two exhibition halls, “Paotai Hun” (“Soul of the Fort”) and “Gulei Xionghun” (“Heroic Spirit of the Old Ramparts”), which present coastal defence history through photographs, objects, models, and scenes. Their opening status on the day has not been confirmed; call before entering to ask whether to include either hall in your visit.

For a separate walk along Yingkou’s historic port street, see Liaohe Old Street.

For another indoor stop on Yingkou’s local history, see Yingkou Museum.

Build your day

An approximately 1-hour visit to the heritage site

Enter through whichever gate is open that day. Visit the main camp gate, main battery, two side batteries, rammed-earth wall, and protective moat. If an exhibition hall is open, visit either “Paotai Hun” or “Gulei Xionghun,” then follow the signs back to the entrance. Allow about 1 hour in total. The route order and whether visitors may climb onto the main battery depend on the on-site opening signs.

Get there

Navigation and checking buses

Search for “西炮台遗址公园” or “Xipaotai Park” in your navigation app. Ctrip lists the address as 营口市西市区渔市街道渤海大街西段116号 (116 Bohai Avenue West Section, Yushi Subdistrict, Xishi District, Yingkou). A page from the Yingkou Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection lists another address, 5 Huiying Street, but it has not been confirmed as the ticket gate. Call 0417-4830090 before entering to confirm the entrance. A 2023 notice said that Route 2 branch service had been extended to Xipaotai; recent maps also list Route 3 and show the coastal sightseeing bus as suspended. Routes and schedules may change, so check current bus information for both the outbound and return trips.

Driving and parking

Reliable current information about parking location, fees, and availability is not available. Before driving, call 0417-4830090 to ask about parking near the heritage-site entrance.
