How to Visit
1

Visit it as an in-city hilltop temple

Sheng'an Temple is inside Yueyang city and built along a slope. It is both a temple visit and a viewpoint for Nanhu, Dongting Lake, and the Yueyang urban area. Do not force it into the Yueyang Tower core walking route.

Tip:It works better as a separate 1.5-2.5 hour stop than as a rushed add-on.
2

Walk upward from the main gate

After entering, follow the route from the main gate through Tianwang Hall, the main hall, Guanyin Hall, and then toward Wanfo Pagoda. This lets you see the temple axis first, then decide whether to continue climbing the tower instead of using all your energy at the start.

Tip:This order keeps the visit easier to manage if you later decide not to climb the pagoda.
3

Decide on Wanfo Pagoda by energy and weather

Wanfo Pagoda is the highest point of Sheng'an Temple and the main reason to climb, but you need to use the stairs, and some interior sections can be dim. It is more worthwhile on clear days with good visibility.

Tip:On rainy days, or with older visitors or children, it is fine to stay around the main halls and the base of the pagoda.
4

Come in the afternoon for city and lake views

If you mainly want the view, afternoon is more comfortable than midday, and the light is softer. In summer, avoid the hottest hours before climbing the tower. In winter or near sunset, allow time for wind, lower temperatures, and the walk back down.

Tip:Do not start the climb too close to closing time, especially in winter.
5

Keep worship, photos, and vegetarian food as separate expectations

Sheng'an Temple has a worship atmosphere, temple architecture, hilltop views, and vegetarian food, but visitors come for different reasons. For photos, focus on the main gate, Guanyin Hall, and Wanfo Pagoda.

Tip:For a quieter visit, avoid the 1st and 15th days of the lunar month and major holidays.
Highlights
  • Sheng'an Temple is one of the more convenient hilltop temple stops within Yueyang city.
  • Wanfo Pagoda gives views toward Nanhu, Dongting Lake, and the Yueyang urban area.
  • Guanyin Hall, the main gate, and the main hall form the clearest temple route.
  • Compared with the Yueyang Tower area, the pace here is slower and quieter.
  • It is more worthwhile for visitors who like temples, climbing, and city viewpoints than for those just passing by.
Insider Tips

Temple admission and Wanfo Pagoda access may be separate, so check whether the tower is included before paying.

Wanfo Pagoda is not an easy elevator-style viewpoint. If stairs, dim interiors, heat, or knees are a concern, do not force the climb.

Some historic-looking features and inscriptions are reconstructed or reproduced, so do not expect everything to be original Tang-dynasty material.

Dress and photograph respectfully inside the temple, and avoid flash or disturbing worshippers inside halls.

If your only goal is a Dongting Lake sunset, Baling Square is usually easier and more open.
