Plan at a glance
Free outer area and paid wall access
Dajingmen Gate is in Qiaoxi District, Zhangjiakou. Search for “大境门景区” (Dajingmen Scenic Area) to reach the main entrance plaza. The outer plaza, gate opening, and Mingdekou Street are free to visit. Climbing the gate tower or walking the Great Wall requires a separate admission ticket; these paid areas are distinct from the outer pedestrian area.
Ticket and hours
Admission to the wall area is about CNY 13. Students receive half-price admission with valid ID, and visitors aged 70 or over enter free. No reservation is required; buy at the ticket office or online in advance. The paid climbing area generally opens 08:00–17:30, with ticket checks stopping at 17:00. Shops along the street set their own hours.

“Great Rivers and Mountains” and the fortified pass
Dajingmen was built in 1644. The inscription “大好河山” (“Great Rivers and Mountains”) was written by Gao Weiyue in 1927. The gate was also the starting point of the Zhangjiakou–Kulun trade route. The gate, inscription, and Great Wall rampart together tell the story of the fortified pass and frontier trade.
Mingdekou Street and the West Gate ruins
Mingdekou’s recreated historic street runs near the main entrance and works well as a short stop before or after the climb. The ruins of Xijingmen offer another historical point of interest beyond the gate itself. Visitors focused on the Great Wall and photography can buy a climbing ticket for wall and city views; if you have limited time, the free outer route still takes in the gate tower and inscription.
For a separate historic-town visit elsewhere in Zhangjiakou, see Jimingyi Ancient City.
Build your day
A 30–50-minute outer-area walk
Start at the main entrance plaza and photograph the “Great Rivers and Mountains” inscription from below the gate. Walk through the gate opening, follow Mingdekou Street for a short stretch, then return to the plaza. This route does not climb the wall or pass through the paid-area ticket check, making it suitable for a brief stop in the city.
A 1–1.5-hour wall climb
From the main entrance plaza, see the gate and inscription first, then buy an admission ticket at the ticket office. After the ticket check, climb the tower and wall toward the first beacon tower. Take in the view over Zhangjiakou and return along the open section you came up. Reaching the wall takes about 10 minutes; continue only within the ticketed area and follow on-site directions.
Timing a visit for sunset
The west-facing rampart frames the brick wall and distant mountains in one view, and the light before sunset is suitable for photography. Ticket checks stop at 17:00, so enter early and allow time to climb and descend if you want sunset light from the wall. For evening views outside the paid area, take photos from the plaza according to the lighting in place that day.
Get there
From the station and city centre
From Zhangjiakou Station, take Bus 1 into town or a taxi to the scenic area; the drive takes about 20–30 minutes. A taxi within the city takes around 15 minutes and costs about CNY 10–20. Bus 3 and other city routes also serve the area.
Driving and parking
There is a parking lot. Reference parking rates are CNY 3 for the first hour and CNY 1 for each additional hour. Navigate to the Dajingmen main entrance plaza, then continue on foot. If you are also visiting Zhangjiakou Fort that day, travel there separately by bus or taxi; the ride takes about 10–20 minutes.
Know before you go
Paid access and walking effort
The free plaza and street do not include the wall path. To walk on the Great Wall, enter through the regular ticketed entrance and buy a ticket. The climb to the wall takes about 10 minutes, followed by more walking and stairs, so wear shoes with good grip. Do not enter the wall from park trails or an unstaffed route around the ticket check.
Photography and weather
Morning light is generally better for photographing the inscription from below the gate. After rain, if there is standing water in the plaza, use it for a reflection shot. Framing outward from the gate opening captures both the arch and the modern city view. At blue hour, photograph the gate’s outline from the plaza; take night shots only if the lights are on that day. Zhangjiakou gets strong sunlight, so bring sun protection and a light jacket, and dress for the actual forecast. Sunset photography on the rampart must fit the ticket-check deadline and the area open that day.
Nearby food and separate city stops
Jingmen Restaurant near the scenic area serves dishes such as Mongolian wild-onion stuffed flatbread (沙葱馅饼), braised lamb offal, and Jingmen Hongyun Chicken; a meal is around CNY 30–40 per person as a reference. Zhangmao Ethnic Restaurant and Muxianglin Restaurant serve beef pies or lamb-offal soup, while Xinxin Youmian Daqian has oat-noodle nests. Zhangjiakou Fort and Shuimu Palace work as separate city stops and are not included in the Dajingmen wall ticket. Zhangjiakou Fort has historic buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties; Shuimu Palace is about 2.6 km away. Anjiagou Ecological Tourism Area is another option for a separate nature stop.
