Plan at a glance

A free public road and its season

Grassland Sky Road runs along the boundary between Zhangbei County and Chongli District. It is an open public road without a general scenic-area entrance, admission ticket, or reservation requirement. It is usually open for travel from late April to late October, but heavy snow may close it from November onward. For greener grass, consider mid-July to late August.

How much time to allow

The East Line from Yeholing to Huapiling is about 100 km and takes around 4–7 hours with stops. If you have less time, enter near Yeholing, drive 30–40 km along the start of the East Line, and return the same way; allow about 2–3 hours. Conditions, distances, and supplies differ on the West Line and Guyuan section, so plan them separately. The East Line timing applies only to the East Line.

Choose your visit

East Line: more viewpoints

The East Line is the classic route, with the Da Hao He Shan (“Great Rivers and Mountains”) viewing platform, Yanpian Mountain, Saibei Terraced Fields, and a wind-turbine array along the way. Viewpoints are relatively concentrated, and traffic can be heavy on public holidays. A common direction is to enter near Yeholing and exit toward Huapiling. Use the signed scenic pull-offs.

West Line: quieter, rougher road conditions

The West Line runs from the Yeholing area toward Bailong Cave and is about 32 km long. It has less traffic, but the road surface is rougher than on the East Line. Consider it if you have mountain-road driving experience and prefer a quieter route; decide whether to go based on conditions on the day.

Guyuan section: longer drive and fewer services

Continue east from Huapiling to enter the Guyuan section. It is about 116 km long, with approximately 793 bends. Traffic and commercial services are limited. The route has mountain grassland and open scenery, and suits photographers and visitors comfortable with a long drive. Carry enough water and food before setting out.

For a wider regional plan comparing the free road with separately ticketed attractions and two-day options, see Zhangbei Bashang Grassland.

Build your day

Full East Line: Yeholing to Huapiling

Join the East Line near the Yeholing expressway exit area. Follow the road signs to the Da Hao He Shan viewing platform, Yanpian Mountain, Saibei Terraced Fields, and wind-turbine scenery, then continue toward Huapiling. The route is about 100 km and takes around 4–7 hours with stops. Driving one way from Yeholing toward Huapiling is recommended. Use signed pull-offs; the road has continuous bends and climbs and descents, so adjust your speed to conditions.

Short East Line: out and back on the first section

Enter the East Line near Yeholing, drive about 30–40 km along the first section, stop for views around Da Hao He Shan and Yanpian Mountain, then return the way you came. Allow about 2–3 hours. This works for a half-day visit or drivers unfamiliar with mountain roads. Do not stop on bends or cross the road for photos.

West Line and Guyuan extension

You can drive the West Line out and back between the Yeholing area and Bailong Cave; it is about 32 km in total. To continue east, turn onto the Guyuan section at Huapiling; the drive is about 116 km. Services are sparse there, so travel in daylight and do not rush through the route at night.

Get there

Driving and expressway navigation

Driving from Beijing to the Yeholing expressway exit area takes about 3.5 hours. “Yeholing Toll Station” is a navigation point for the expressway exit area, not a Grassland Sky Road ticket gate. After leaving the expressway, follow the road signs to the public road. Grassland Sky Road itself has no scenic-area admission fee; expressway tolls are charged separately according to the section travelled. Separately ticketed attractions have their own entrances and ticket offices.

Car rental, parking, and the return drive

If travelling from elsewhere, take a high-speed train to Zhangjiakou Station and continue by rental or chartered car. Foreign visitors who plan to drive a rental car need a valid Chinese driver’s licence or a Chinese temporary motor vehicle driving permit; an ordinary International Driving Permit (IDP) by itself cannot be used to drive in China. If you do not have the required permit, a chartered car is more practical. Public transport alone makes it difficult to stop at viewpoints along the road. Park only at signed scenic pull-offs; roadside vendors and privately enclosed areas are not official parking lots. Mobile reception can be weak, so download an offline map and check the return direction before leaving.

Know before you go

Fuel, charging, and road conditions

There are no fuel stations along the route, and charging facilities are limited. Refuel or charge in Zhangbei or Guyuan County before setting out. Most of the main road is a two-way paved road with successive S-bends and climbs and descents. Cattle or sheep may cross; slow down. New drivers should shorten the route or hire a driver familiar with mountain roads.

Parking, photography, and roadside activities

Da Hao He Shan viewing platform, Yanpian Mountain, and Luoyagu are places to photograph grassland, the road, and wind turbines. Light is softer before 09:00 and after 16:00. Get out only at permitted scenic pull-offs; do not take photos from the road or enter privately enclosed land. Farmhouse restaurants vary in price and quality. Before taking a roadside horse ride or off-road vehicle activity, ask about its operating location, duration, route, and price.

Weather closures and supplies

Grass is greener from mid-July to late August. Snow from November onward may close the road, so check the weather and road status before you leave. Bring drinking water, food, and some cash. Restaurants are more plentiful in Zhangbei and Guyuan County; local options include roast whole lamb, lamb soup, hand-held lamb, and oat noodles. Mobile reception along the road can be unstable, so do not rely entirely on live navigation for the return trip.
