Plan at a glance
Location and how to get in
Volcano Island is in Qianting Town, Zhangpu County, Zhangzhou. It is not on Dongshan Island, and the drive between the two is about 1.5-2 hours. The commonly used entrance is the main ticket office at the front gate; the scenic area has one unified gate and ticket, so do not arrange it as if it were one of Dongshan Island's beaches.
Tickets and opening hours
The base gate ticket costs CNY 60 and covers the volcanic coast only; the package that includes Monument Valley and Rainbow Mountain costs about CNY 158. The shuttle bus costs CNY 20 per person, and because the scenic area is large, most visitors need it. The opening hours are about 8:15-17:30, entry generally stops around 16:00, and the internal attractions close around 17:00. Exact hours follow the day.
How much time you need
A quick visit takes about 2 hours: take the shuttle bus to see Rainbow Mountain, Monument Valley, and the lighthouse by the sea, then return. If you want to look closely at the volcanic geology, the museum, and the black reef coast, allow about 3-4 hours. The area is remote with limited facilities, so arrange transport and the return trip before leaving.

Pink Monument Valley
Monument Valley is the scenic area's main photo point: a castle-like building with a maze feel, macaron colours, and geometric spaces. Whether it is open and which areas you can enter follows the on-site situation that day. Do not treat every scene in promotional photos as a guaranteed stop.
Rainbow Mountain and the black reef coast
Rainbow Mountain has colourful graffiti slopes, retro buses, and round cottage-shaped structures. The black reef coast is made up of rock columns formed by cooled volcanic lava, but whether you can get close to the shoreline follows the on-site situation. The coastal basalt boardwalk mentioned in older guides is now fully closed; you can only view it from the overlook and cannot walk down onto the rocks.
Volcanic geology museum and who it suits
The museum has volcanic rock specimens and interactive displays, and it also offers shade away from the midday heat. The scenic area suits visitors who enjoy photography, family study trips, and people willing to drive a long distance for a single destination. If you mainly want a natural coastline, the Baishawan direction or Dongshan Island may be easier to arrange.
Build your day
Quick route (about 2 hours)
After entering, take the shuttle bus first, then visit Rainbow Mountain, the Monument Valley maze, and the lighthouse by the sea in order, and return the same way. When time is tight, focus on Monument Valley and Rainbow Mountain and do not rush back and forth between attractions.
Half-day route (about 3-4 hours)
Start with Rainbow Mountain, then go to Monument Valley, then visit the volcanic geology museum, and end at the basalt coast overlook. If you want to watch the sunset, leave the evening for the coast, but the light and cloud conditions follow the day and should not be treated as a fixed scene.
Plan separately from Dongshan Island
Volcano Island is in a different direction from Dongshan Island, so do not write it into the same island route. If you plan to visit both, allow a 3-day, 2-night self-drive trip, put Volcano Island on its own day, and leave enough time for the cross-region drive.
Get there
Driving and parking
Driving is the most convenient option. Navigate to "Volcano Island Natural Ecological Scenic Area"; the official parking lot costs about CNY 10 per visit and has enough spaces. Do not park at roadside spots where people solicit drivers, because those may be private lots that charge more.
High-speed rail and taxis
After high-speed rail to Zhangzhou Station or Zhangpu Station, a taxi to the scenic area takes about 40-60 minutes and costs about CNY 100-150, so sharing a ride or arranging a car in advance is better. From Zhangpu Station, Bus 16 also runs to the Volcano Park stop for CNY 10, but the service is sparse and the time cost is high.
Moving around the off-island area
There is no convenient bus loop around Volcano Island, and finding a return taxi is not always easy, so confirm your return plan before setting out. Inside the scenic area, move mainly by shuttle bus; do not try to walk long distances.
Know before you go
Ticket boundaries
The base ticket covers the volcanic coast only; the package includes Monument Valley and Rainbow Mountain, and the shuttle ticket is separate. Before buying, confirm which attractions and areas are open that day, and do not pay in advance for everything shown in the promotional material.
Boardwalk closed
The seaside basalt boardwalk is fully closed, and you cannot get close to the rocks; photography is only possible from the overlook. Do not treat routes from older guides as current routes, and do not enter any closed area.
Facilities and supplies
There are very few restaurants inside, some shops may be closed in the off-season, and bottled water may be older stock, so bring enough water and dry food. Keep valuables with you and do not leave bags on the shuttle bus.
Sun, insects, and weather
The coast has no shade and strong UV, so bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and insect repellent; the grassier areas have mosquitoes. Strong wind or rain may affect some attractions and sea views, so check the weather before leaving and adjust the plan if conditions are not suitable.
