Plan at a glance

A free village-and-waterfall loop

Hongni Village is in Hongtiguan Township, Pingshun County, with houses built along a cliffside. The main sights are Hongni Waterfall, the stone-built historic village, and the Minghui Master Pagoda. The village is free and open all day, and a complete loop takes about 1.5–2.5 hours. Reaching the valley floor and crossing to the far side involve steps and a river crossing, so allow for more effort than a flat village walk.

Entrance and parking

Navigate to “虹霓村” (Hongni Village). Cars can reach the village entrance or the road viewpoint. Parking at the village entrance is free, followed by about 800 metres of level walking to the viewpoint. You can also navigate to the area around “南海观世音菩萨庙” (Nanhai Guanyin Bodhisattva Temple), where roadside parking is free and the walk to the waterfall viewpoint is shorter; follow the on-site parking arrangements.

Choose your visit

Hongni Waterfall

Hongni Waterfall drops about 80 metres, and its flow is usually stronger in summer. You can feel the spray below the falls. A rainbow may appear when sunlight reaches the mist, but the water volume and viewing distance change with the season, rainfall, and the safety line in operation that day.

The stone-built historic village

Stone is used extensively in the houses, walls, lanes, and roofs, creating a continuous village landscape. Walk slowly through the lanes to take in the building scale and the cliffside setting. Shops and public facilities are basic, so expect a simple village environment rather than the services of a large scenic area.

The Minghui Master Pagoda

The Minghui Master Pagoda stands along the village section of the route. It is a nationally protected historic site from the Later Tang period of the Five Dynasties and deserves a separate stop. View it from the open path without touching the pagoda; photography is subject to the heritage-protection notices on site.

For the separate full-day gorge visit nearby, see Tongtian Gorge Scenic Area.

Build your day

Full loop: the panorama first, then the valley floor

Start at the road viewpoint and look down over Hongni Waterfall and the village. Follow the steep steps to the bottom of the gorge for a closer view of the spray, then cross by footbridge or stepping stones depending on the water level and facilities operating that day. Walk up the trail on the far side into the stone village and finish at the Minghui Master Pagoda. The route takes about 1.5–2 hours and returns near the entrance.

Short stop: the viewpoint and village lanes

If your knees or stamina make the descent unsuitable, stay at the road viewpoint for the waterfall and village panorama, then take the gentler path into the village lanes for about 45–60 minutes. This option skips the close-up spray, river crossing, and far-side trail. Leave by the way you came and return to your parking spot; do not force the steep steps simply to complete the loop.

Combine it with Tongtian Gorge on the same day

Hongni Village is about 4.5 km from Tongtian Gorge, about a 12-minute drive, so the two can be arranged as morning and afternoon stops. They have separate parking, tickets, and walking routes. Whether to visit Tongtian Gorge or Hongni Village first depends on entry times, waterfall flow, your energy, and the return vehicles; the two places do not share a ticket.

Get there

Drive into the village

Driving from Changzhi takes about 2 hours, and the approach includes many winding mountain roads. After navigating to Hongni Village, check whether there is space at the village car park. When holiday traffic increases, roadside parking must follow on-site management and cannot block the village road or viewpoint entrance.

The limits of public transport

Driving is currently the dependable way to reach Hongni Village; there is no reliable public-transport shuttle. If you are coming from Changzhi East Railway Station or Tongtian Gorge, arrange a vehicle for both directions in advance. A last-minute taxi, a village shuttle, or the river-crossing facilities cannot be treated as guaranteed services.

Know before you go

Steps, crossings, and weather

The steps from the viewpoint to the valley floor are steep, and the far-side trail becomes slippery after rain. Whether the footbridge or stepping stones can be used depends on the water level and maintenance that day. Children crossing the river need adult supervision; stay away from fast water and the area below the waterfall.

Facilities and the village environment

Most public toilets in the village are dry toilets, and facilities are basic. Bring drinking water and food in advance. Take any rubbish away with you if bins are not available near the waterfall. Protect your phone in wet weather and take photos from the viewpoint or open trail without leaning beyond the cliff edge.

Nearby trail and noodles

The Hongtiguan Ancient Trail is about 3.5 km from the village and is associated with transport history from the Ming Jiajing period. Adding it requires separate driving and walking time. The village has farmhouse restaurants and hand-pulled noodles, but opening hours and serving times are not consistent; if you still need to reach Tongtian Gorge or return to Changzhi, keep the meal and return plan separate.
