2–3 hours: easy mountain-air route
From the ticket gate, walk about 30 minutes to the Tianchi camping area and viewing platform, then enjoy the cloud views and grassland before returning downhill.
Overnight: sunrise and cloud-sea route
Arrive in the afternoon to camp or stay in a mountain guesthouse, watch sunset, then leave around 04:00 for the sunrise platform and wait for sunrise at roughly 05:30.
Tea-garden route
Combine Phoenix Tianchi with Wudong Village, Da’an Ancient Tea Garden and the Phoenix Dancong Tea Museum before returning downhill for local food.
Build your day
Decide first whether to stay overnight
Without camping, focus on Tianchi, the grassland and viewing platform. For sunrise, decide on a campsite or guesthouse in advance and build in cold-weather clothing, supplies and a safe night route.
Place tea gardens on the downhill side
Wudong Village and Da’an Ancient Tea Garden fit naturally after Tianchi, especially for old tea trees and spring tea-picking activity. Allow extra road and parking time during spring tea season and the March–May azalea period.
Get there
Driving and visitor buses
Mountain roads are steep and winding. New drivers should use the transfer-centre bus; the older Fengwu Road is narrow and sharply curved, while the newer road is wider but steep. Avoid night driving unless fully prepared.
Return bus tickets are about 30–60 CNY; private shared-car returns from Chaozhou or Shantou are around 200–300 CNY.
Know before you go
Camping, cold and supplies
The campsite near the ticket gate has toilets and shops, while the grassland near Tianchi management requires carrying equipment uphill. Sunrise temperatures can be more than 10°C lower than in town, so bring warm layers, a hat, gloves, headlamp, power bank, water and food.
Weather and mountain paths
Cloud seas are more likely after rain followed by clear weather. Stone steps are safer at night than the red boardwalk, which can be slippery; parking is tight during tea season and holidays.
