Location and usual entrance
Tongtian Grotto Scenic Area (通天岩) is in Shuixi Town, outside walking range of Ganzhou's old town. By car or taxi, navigate to “Tongtian Grotto Scenic Area – Northeast Gate” (通天岩风景名胜区-东北门). A ground-level car park is at the gate, with the visitor centre within walking distance; arrange a separate return journey from the old town.
Tickets and opening hours
Non-local adult admission is about CNY 55. Students and visitors aged 65 or above pay about CNY 27.5, while local Ganzhou residents pay about CNY 30 with an ID card. General hours are 08:30–17:30. Reservation requirements, on-site ticket sales and discounts may change, so check the rules in effect that day before buying.
How much time to allow
The core grotto route through Guanxin Rock, Wanggui Rock, Longhu Rock, Cuiwei Rock and the area near the Reclining Buddha takes about 1.5–2 hours. The full route takes about 2–3 hours. The scenic area includes climbs and steps, and the full route requires sustained walking, so older travellers and children may prefer the core route.

Grottoes, cliff inscriptions and statues
The main sights are concentrated around Guanxin Rock, Wanggui Rock, Longhu Rock and Cuiwei Rock, where cliff inscriptions and statues appear along the same walking route as the Danxia landforms. The large Reclining Buddha is a clear endpoint for the core area and a useful place to decide whether to continue uphill.
Flower season and photo locations
The grotto interiors are suited to close-up photographs of rock textures and changing light, while the Reclining Buddha works for a full-figure view. Hydrangeas around Wanggui Rock and Longhu Rock usually enter their main viewing season from May to June, but flowering depends on weather and maintenance. Combine the flowers with softer morning or late-afternoon light, while expecting the display to vary from year to year.
Who this works for
Visitors interested in historic buildings, grotto art and cliff inscriptions can choose the core grotto route. Those who want both flowers and statues can allow 2–3 hours for the full visit. Families and solo visitors can turn back near the Reclining Buddha and avoid the rougher back-mountain areas with abandoned facilities.

Core grotto route: about 1.5–2 hours
Enter through the Northeast Gate and follow the main path past the grotto groups at Guanxin Rock, Wanggui Rock, Longhu Rock and Cuiwei Rock. After reaching the large Reclining Buddha, return along the nearby lakeside path. This route keeps the main statues and inscriptions while avoiding the rougher back-mountain sections.
Full route: about 2–3 hours
Follow this order: Guanxin Rock, Wanggui Rock, Wangjiang Pavilion, Longhu Rock, Cuiwei Rock, Cimu Guanlan, Danya Juehe (丹崖绝壑), Yudai Bridge, Qingshui Platform, Hongdou Pavilion, Chunguang Pavilion, Ruyi Pagoda, Lanyue Pavilion and Yangxin Valley. The route sometimes includes stamp collecting, medals or cultural gifts; ask at the visitor centre whether the activity is running and how to collect anything offered.
How to handle the back mountain
The back mountain has abandoned castles, a swimming pool, a maze and other man-made facilities, with poor protection and rough surfaces on some sections. Stay on open main paths and follow scenic-area signs; do not enter abandoned areas, private businesses or poorly protected side paths. After reaching the Reclining Buddha, the lakeside loop is the safer way back.
Get there
Navigation and outside transport
Use “Tongtian Grotto Scenic Area – Northeast Gate” as the navigation target instead of the shorter name “Tongtian Grotto.” The site is in Shuixi Town and is best visited as a separate trip from Ganzhou city; if you are not driving, confirm the bus and return taxi situation before leaving, and do not assume that the scenic area has a regular shuttle.
Parking and return
The Northeast Gate has a ground-level car park, which may fill during holidays; arriving earlier improves your chance of finding a space. Driving gives the simplest return. Before taking a taxi, confirm that a vehicle can pick up outside the scenic area, as a walking exit inside the site is not the same as a city transport stop.

Climbs, weather and safety
Although the scenic area is not known for high elevation, the grotto route still includes climbs, steps and sustained walking, so wear shoes with good grip. Rock surfaces and the lakeside path can be slippery after rain. Do not enter unprotected or abandoned facilities; if a private temple or commercial stop actively offers a service, ask what it includes and how much it costs before accepting.
Flowers, food and tickets
Hydrangeas are usually best observed from May to June, while flower conditions, tickets and opening hours may change; check the latest conditions and notice before leaving. Outside the scenic area, consider Wanggui Xiaochi (忘归小吃) for soup rice noodles and fried cured-meat rice cakes, or Laobiao Riverside Restaurant (湖边老表饭店) for Ganzhou Hakka food. Gannan dishes can be spicy, so ask for no spice or mild spice.
