How to Visit
1

Make Kunlun Spring a stop on the Qinghai-Tibet route, not a standalone destination

Kunlun Spring is at Nachitai on G109, about 90 km from Golmud. It works best as a practical supply and rest stop when traveling toward the Kunlun Mountains.

Tip:At around 3,700 m above sea level, refuel in Golmud and carry drinking water and snacks before setting out. Do not plan it as a large standalone attraction.
2

Pull into a designated parking area for a short stop

Drive into the marked parking or short-stay area, then walk to the spring and nearby viewing area. A 15-30 minute stop is usually enough.

Tip:Heavy vehicles use G109. Never stop in a traffic lane, on the shoulder, or where sightlines are poor. Keep the stop short: take care of rest and water needs first, then continue your drive.
3

Focus on the spring, a brief rest, and adjusting to the altitude

Walk slowly around the spring and take photos. If a marked water-collection point is available, use it as instructed; do not assume that an unmarked water source is safe to drink.

Tip:At this altitude, avoid rushing, running, or staying in strong sun for too long. Even for a short stop, bring water, a windproof layer, and sun protection, then assess how everyone feels before continuing uphill.
Highlights
  • A natural spring on the Qinghai-Tibet route, useful as the first highland stop after leaving Golmud.
  • Nachitai combines the spring, mountain highway, and plateau landscape in one quick roadside stop.
  • At about 3,700 m, it is a sensible place to slow down before continuing to higher elevations.
  • Its value is in a brief, well-timed stop rather than treating it as a separate destination.
  • For drivers, it is mainly a place to rest safely, hydrate, and reassess both the vehicle and the group.
Insider Tips

Kunlun Spring is a route stop, not a large walking attraction; 15-30 minutes is normally sufficient.

There is no direct public transport along this route, so self-driving or including it in a hired-car itinerary is most practical.

Do not take photos beside moving highway traffic or reverse to find a better angle; get out only in clearly permitted areas.

Highland UV exposure and wind are noticeable here, so bring sun protection, a windproof layer, and water even for a brief stop.

Before continuing to higher elevations, assess everyone's condition; do not push on if someone has clear symptoms of discomfort.
