Location, entrances and opening pattern

Gaobang Mountain is inside the Honghua Lake area in Huicheng District, at an elevation of about 229 metres. Use “Gaobang Mountain Guaibang Pavilion” or “Three Halls Square” for navigation. Three Halls Square is best for the stair route, the North Gate has a gentler path for older visitors and children, and the Honghua Lake East Gate offers a sightseeing shuttle towards Huifeng Pavilion.

The mountain is free and does not require a reservation. The area is accessible throughout the day; Guaibang Pavilion is generally open from 10:00 to 21:30, while Xiangyun Tower lights are usually on from 18:30 to 22:00. Plan both the sunset and the lit return route in advance.

Choose your visit

1–1.5 hours: summit route

Enter from Three Halls Square, climb the stairs for about 30 minutes, go up to the sixth-floor viewing platform of Guaibang Pavilion, then see the Xiangyun Tower lights before returning the same way. This suits visitors who mainly want city views and evening lights.

Around 2 hours: family route

Enter from the North Gate and follow the gentler sloping path to Guaibang Pavilion, taking about 1.5 hours, then descend on a different path to form a short loop. It is better for families who do not want a continuous stair climb.

3–4 hours: Honghua Lake connection

Start at Honghua Lake South Gate, walk the greenway to the 14-kilometre point and the 18-kilometre finish, then turn left for about 200 metres from the 0-kilometre starting point to climb the mountain. Finish at Guaibang Pavilion for sunset. This combines a cycling or walking day at Honghua Lake with a city-night viewpoint.

Build your day

From the gate to the viewing platform

Three Halls Square → stair path → sixth-floor viewing platform at Guaibang Pavilion → Xiangyun Tower → return the same way. The sixth floor looks across Honghua Lake, Huizhou West Lake, the Dong River and the Jiangbei city area.

A gentler route for older visitors and children

Gaobang Mountain North Gate → gentle path → Guaibang Pavilion → alternative descent path. Do not rush the route merely to catch the lights; the gentler approach gives more room for breaks.

Sunset photography timing

Start climbing around 16:00, reach the summit around 17:30 for sunset, and keep 19:00–20:00 for blue-hour city lights. The platform outside Guaibang Pavilion works for building-and-sky reflections, while Xiangyun Tower is suited to wide-angle evening views.

Get there

Public transport and the sightseeing shuttle

Bus routes 29 and 36, among others, stop at Gaobang Mountain Park or Honghua Lake. If you do not want to walk uphill, take the sightseeing shuttle from Honghua Lake East Gate towards Huifeng Pavilion, then continue on the available paths.

Driving

Gaobang Mountain Parking Lot costs about CNY 5 per visit during its daytime operating period of around 5:00–22:00 and has charging facilities. On holidays, arriving before 10:00 or after 15:00 makes parking easier.

Descent and safety

Do not use unlit mountain stairways after dark. For the descent, take the paved path towards Gaobang Mountain North Gate, which has more reliable lighting. Guaibang Pavilion has lifts: the left lift reaches the fourth floor and the right lift can reach the sixth floor.

Weather, supplies and photography

The summit is exposed and can have mosquitoes in summer, so bring sun protection, a hat, insect repellent and water. Shops exist halfway up and near the top, but supplies are limited and more expensive. Do not fly drones around Guaibang Pavilion.
