Location, etiquette and opening pattern
Yuanmiao Taoist Temple is on Yunci Road, on the northern shore of West Lake, near Zhuwu Alley and Fengzhu Garden. The main gate is on the Shuimen Road side. Entry is free by QR code or ID card; the temple is generally open from 7:30 to 17:30, with some periods using 8:00–17:00, so it is best scheduled between 8:30 and 16:30.
The first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, as well as public holidays, can be busier with worshippers. Some Mondays may be used for maintenance closures. This is best treated as a short, quiet stop for temple buildings and courtyards rather than a long visit.
How to fit it into your day
A walk from the mountain gate through the Jade Emperor Hall and Three Pure Ones Hall to the old banyan outside takes around 30 minutes. First-time visitors can combine it with Zhuwu Alley, Fengzhu Garden and a West Lake boat ride in an easy one-and-a-half to two-hour half-day route.

Thirty-minute visit
Mountain gate → “Gate of All Mysteries” archway → Jade Emperor Hall → Three Pure Ones Hall → old banyan outside the temple. This is an easy addition to a north-shore West Lake walk and covers the main buildings and courtyard.
West Lake half-day route
Yuanmiao Taoist Temple → Zhuwu Alley → Fengzhu Garden → West Lake boat ride → Nine-Bend Bridge. Visit the temple in the morning or earlier afternoon, then continue naturally to the gardens and lakeside.
Old-town Citywalk
West Lake North Gate → Yuanmiao Taoist Temple → Zhuwu Alley → Chaojing Gate → Wenbi Pagoda → Hejiang Tower → Shuidong Street → Dongpo Temple → Yedao Cultural Life Community. This is suitable for visitors who want to link religious architecture, the old town and evening river views.

Order inside the temple
Enter through the mountain gate, see the Ming-style archway and couplets, then visit the Jade Emperor Hall, Three Pure Ones Hall and courtyard. The yin-yang and twelve-zodiac patterns in the courtyard, mature trees and inscribed steles are useful points to pause at.
A short heritage stop
Look for the “Penglai” inscription, steles from the Song, Ming and Qing periods, and the old trees in the complex. If you choose to make offerings, keep a quiet pace, follow the site’s order and avoid treating deity images as photography subjects.
Continue around West Lake
From the main gate, continue towards Zhuwu Alley or Fengzhu Garden, then connect with a West Lake boat ride and Nine-Bend Bridge. If you plan to visit Hejiang Tower and Shuidong Street that evening, this north-shore-to-old-town direction is efficient.

Buses and cycling
Bus routes 1, 19, 36 and 213 stop near West Lake North Gate or Fengzhu Garden, followed by a 400–600 metre walk. Shared e-bikes are useful within the city and reduce time spent looking for parking around West Lake.
Driving
The Yuanmiao Taoist Temple car park at No. 33 Shuimen Road is free for one hour, then charges from CNY 5. West Lake Scenic Area Parking Lot costs around CNY 10 per hour and is about a five-minute walk away. For a short visit, use the parking option closest to the main gate.
Know before you go
Clothing and photography etiquette
Avoid overly revealing clothing in this Taoist religious setting; bring a light outer layer if you are wearing shorts or a sleeveless top. Do not touch deity images or historic steles, and do not use flash photography inside the halls.
Timing and conditions
The courtyard is quieter and the light is softer before 9:00 on weekdays and after 16:00. Bring sun protection and mosquito repellent in summer. The first and fifteenth lunar days draw more worshippers, so visitors seeking a quieter visit should avoid those periods.
