Location, tickets and opening hours
Jiulong Peak is in Huidong County; navigate to “Jiulong Peak Tan Gong Ancestral Temple”. The trail begins behind the temple’s main gate. Entry and parking are free, while incense and fortune services inside the temple are optional expenses.
The area is generally open from 7:00 to 18:00, with 8:30–16:00 the most practical visiting period. Weekends, Lunar New Year and Qingming can bring more worshippers and hikers.

1.5–2 hours: blessing route
Temple main gate → Dedao Pavilion → Wenwu Palace → Longtong Temple → Wenchang Palace → Tan Gong Main Hall → return the same way. This is mostly level and suits families or visitors not planning to reach the summit.
3–4 hours: summit route
Trailhead behind the temple → eight rest pavilions → viewing platform → 2,739-step summit climb → return the same way. Around 95% of the stairs are relatively gentle, but the final section is steeper and trekking poles are useful.
5–6 hours: traverse route
Climb the east route → farm-track section near the boundary marker → Sanyatou → descend the west route. The route is about 10 kilometres with around 500 metres of total ascent; its later section is steep and slippery, so it is for experienced, partnered hikers with rope.

Temple and blessing route
Temple main gate → Dedao Pavilion → Wenwu Palace → Longtong Temple → Wenchang Palace → Tan Gong Main Hall. The buildings are spread from the foot of the mountain up the lower slopes, so take time to see the Ming and Qing architecture.
Summit route
Trailhead behind the temple → rest pavilions → Wanglong Pavilion → summit → return. Treat each pavilion as a rest point rather than measuring the day only by stair count.
Heritage extension
Jiulong Peak → Jiaofeng She ethnic village or Huangsiyang Ancient Walled Village → Duozhu Town. Visitors not aiming for the summit can use nearby villages and tea areas for an easier afternoon.
Get there
Driving
The drive from Guangzhou, Shenzhen or Dongguan takes around 1.5–2 hours. The Jiulong Peak Ancestral Temple car park is free and has ample space. Drive directly into this car park rather than accepting unnecessary parking arrangements at the approach road.
Public transport
Take high-speed rail to Huidongnan Station, then a taxi for around CNY 40; alternatively, use bus 701 from Huidong County to the Jiulong Peak road junction. Allow extra time for the last transfer to the temple.
Know before you go
Supplies, footwear and route safety
The mountain trail has no supply points or toilets, so bring at least two bottles of water, one electrolyte drink and energy food. Wear non-slip hiking shoes, quick-dry long sleeves, a hat and use trekking poles. Do not take unmarked side paths; farm tracks are especially slippery when wet.
Timing and temple arrangements
Vegetarian meals at the summit temple begin around 11:30 and need advance arrangement; otherwise bring your own food. From April to October, each person should carry at least about 750 ml of water. On weekends, enter before 8:00 or after 14:00 to avoid the busiest period.
