Plan at a glance
Ride in, then walk into the wetland
Ergun National Wetland Park (额尔古纳国家湿地公园) is in Shang Kuli Subdistrict, about 25 km or a 30-minute drive from Ergun. It is separate from the city-side Ergun Wetland Scenic Area: at this park, take the sightseeing bus to the walking area, then enter the wetland on boardwalks for views over the Gen River (根河) valley.
Tickets, shuttle, and hours
In peak season, May 1–October 31, admission is about CNY 60 and the sightseeing bus about CNY 20; there is no walking route that replaces the shuttle. The park is open 08:00–17:00, with ticket sales ending at 16:30. Tickets can currently be bought on site without a reservation, but confirm prices and operating arrangements on the day.

Choose your visit
Woodland and mudflats along the boardwalks
After taking the sightseeing bus to the trailhead, follow the boardwalk through birch forest, past wooden bridges and river-valley mudflats. The visit takes you into the wetland on foot, with views of the Gen River and surrounding woodland from several platforms; it is different from looking out over the wetland from a high point near town.
Squirrels may be foraging along the boardwalk, and the bridges and open valley make good photo stops. Do not feed wildlife. To photograph the mudflats or bends in the river, stay on open boardwalks and do not cross wetland vegetation.
Walk to the Zhuangmei Shanhe summit viewpoint
Zhuangmei Shanhe (壮美山河, “Magnificent Rivers and Mountains”) is the summit viewpoint at the end of the full trail, overlooking the S-bend of the Gen River Wetland. The route climbs steadily toward the viewpoint. Allow about 3–4 hours for the full boardwalk visit, including the climb and descent, subject to the route and shuttle arrangements in operation that day. Visitors who are not comfortable with a long uphill walk can choose the short route.
The deer enclosure costs extra
The deer enclosure requires a separate ticket, apart from park admission and the sightseeing bus. You can skip it if you are visiting for the wetland and boardwalks; check at the entrance whether it is open that day and what the current price is.
Build your day
Short route and back, about 2 hours
From the park entrance, take the sightseeing bus to the trailhead and follow the main boardwalk to the first viewing platform. Use the trail map and signs to return to the designated bus pickup point. The short route is about 1.2 km and takes around 2 hours; confirm how the distance is measured and where to board on the day’s map and shuttle plan.
Full boardwalk, about 3–4 hours
From the bus drop-off, follow the boardwalk past birch-forest bridges, river-valley mudflats, and viewing platforms, continuing uphill to the Zhuangmei Shanhe summit viewpoint. The full route is listed as about 3.5 km and 3–4 hours, but the distance measurement, descent trail, and summit pickup point are unspecified. Check the day’s trail map, follow open-route signs to the designated park pickup point, and confirm the final shuttle. Do not assume you will return along the same trail to the same bus stop. If the map does not show the descent and shuttle connection, ask staff before starting the full route.
The round-trip drive from town takes about an hour; allow about two hours for the short walk and at least half a day for the full boardwalk, descent, and shuttle. Return from the pickup point you have confirmed; do not build an unknown summit shuttle stop into the plan.
Get there
Drive south on S201
Navigate to “额尔古纳国家湿地公园” (Ergun National Wetland Park), then follow road signs to the visitor area. From central Ergun, drive about 25 km south on Provincial Road S201, usually around 30 minutes. Map pins may be imprecise, so follow signs at the park entrance.
Confirm transit and parking
If you are not driving, ask the park about transfers and return departures before setting out. Drivers should park as directed at the entrance, then take the park sightseeing bus to the walking area. Follow the day’s entrance notice for parking location and fees.
Know before you go
The boardwalk climbs continuously
The boardwalk has a steady climb, and the first platform can serve as the turnaround point for a short visit. The full route also requires time for the ascent, descent, and final shuttle. If someone in your group has limited stamina, walk to the first platform and return from there.
Birch color changes quickly in autumn
Mid-September is usually a good time to see birch leaves; after late September, more leaves have fallen. Conditions vary with the year’s weather. If you are making a special trip for autumn color, check leaf conditions and park access before leaving, rather than relying on the same date each year.
Eat back in town and allow for a wait
There are no other nearby attractions that fit easily into the same visit, so plan this as a separate half-day outing and return to Ergun for a meal. Shuncheng Braised Lamb is an option for braised lamb; a wait may take 40–60 minutes. Yulin Jinbing (榆林筋饼), known for thin, chewy wheat pancakes, is another option for a casual Northeast Chinese meal. Confirm locations and opening hours before you go.
Ask about accessibility and restrooms
The route climbs continuously. If someone in your group needs a wheelchair-accessible route, fewer steps, or a nearby restroom, ask the park which areas and facilities are accessible before buying tickets.
