Lakeshore and grassland scenery
Huhenur Grassland Scenic Area (呼和诺尔草原旅游区) is in Chen Barag Banner, between Hailar and Manzhouli. The main draws are Huhenur Lake (呼和诺尔湖) and the surrounding grassland. Unlike open grassland along the road, this is a separate ticketed attraction with sightseeing-bus options; navigate to the official entrance before planning lakeside activities.
Reference prices and entry hours
A ticket with the sightseeing bus is about CNY 27. Listed opening hours are 08:00–19:00, but the last-entry cutoff is not specified. Do not assume you can enter at 19:00; confirm the actual cutoff before visiting. A short lakeside visit takes about 2–3 hours; allow enough time for your planned visit and confirm the ticket-sales cutoff and return transport on the day.

Choose your visit
See the lake, then choose a grassland activity
Huhenur Lake is the focus of a visit. A walk along the shore takes in open water, grassland, and distant yurts. Weather and wind affect the lakeside view; on a clear day, sunset light changes noticeably, and sunset time varies by season.
Horse riding and speedboat rides are operator-run activities and may not be included in the basic admission ticket. Check what is open that day, the activity duration, and the fee before choosing one. If you skip the activities, you can spend the time walking and taking photos along the shore.
Sunset, stars, and yurts
For lake and grassland photos, use the open shore, where yurts may appear in the frame. Check whether lakeside swings or other facilities are open and whether they charge a fee; do not cross fences or enter an operator’s area or private campsite to find a photo spot.
Yurts by the lake are mainly for overnight stays. Access to their interiors and guest areas is controlled by the accommodation operator; take photos only from the public shore or an area where photography is clearly allowed.
For a separate pine-forest walk near central Hailar, see Hailar National Forest Park.
Build your day
Quick lakeside visit, about 2–3 hours
Enter through the tourist-area gate and follow signs to the main lakeside area. Walk along the open shore first, then choose horse riding or a speedboat if it is operating. Return to the entrance afterward. Allow about 2–3 hours for the walk and activities; skipping the activities shortens the visit. Leave according to the last available return transport.
Stay overnight for sunset and morning lake views
To see sunset, the night sky, and the lake the next morning, book a cabin such as “Lansonghu (Blue Pine Lake)” or “Muhu (Pasture Lake)” inside the scenic area in advance. Arrive in the afternoon and check in before viewing sunset from a lakeshore area permitted by the accommodation operator. At night, stay within the operator’s designated area; after sunrise the next morning, leave from the lodging as directed.
Get there
Drive from Hailar or Manzhouli
Search for “呼和诺尔草原旅游区” (Huhenur Grassland Scenic Area). The one-way drive takes about 1 hour from Hailar or 1.5 hours from Manzhouli; these estimates do not include time inside the scenic area. Add the return drive separately for a same-day round trip. Follow on-site directions for parking and entrance checks; do not park along public grassland roads.
Confirm public transport first
If you are not driving, do not plan around a fixed bus timetable. Ask the scenic area whether transfers from Hailar or Manzhouli are available that day, where to board, and when return services run before setting your arrival time or booking accommodation. Follow the day’s entrance instructions for parking location and fees.
Know before you go
Check lodging and meal terms
Accommodation in the scenic area is usually more expensive than city hotels, and facilities vary by room type. When booking, confirm the view, bathroom, heating, meals, latest check-in time, and cancellation terms. Restaurants nearby are limited, so overnight guests should ask about meal hours and supplies; vehicle access for guests and nighttime access are also set by the operator.
A “lake-view cabin” does not guarantee an unobstructed view in every room. Confirm the room’s orientation and window view when booking.
Protect against mosquitoes and evening chill
There are many mosquitoes along the lake; bring repellent. Grassland winds and large temperature drops in the morning and evening make a windproof jacket useful even in summer. Stargazing at night is limited to the designated area of accommodation you have booked; do not enter an unattended lakeshore or grassland after closing.
Cloud cover and wind affect sunset and stargazing. Check the forecast before booking an overnight stay. If wind or rain strengthens in the evening, stop lakeside activities as directed by the scenic area and accommodation operator and return indoors.
