Plan at a glance
Location, character and entrances
De'anli is in Nan Village, Hongyang Town, Puning, Jieyang. It is a large traditional residential compound where local people still live. The usual entrances are the main square and a rear gate near the residential area. The public lanes and shared areas are free to enter, but occupied homes, private courtyards and closed areas are not exhibits.
Opening hours and what is accessible
The village lanes can generally be entered throughout the day. The internal museum and art gallery usually open from 09:00 to 17:00 and close on Mondays and Tuesdays; the residential lanes may remain accessible during those closures. Admission is free and no advance reservation is needed, but avoid Monday and Tuesday if the exhibition spaces are important to your visit.
How long to allow
The short route takes 1–2 hours and covers the old village, Fang Clan Ancestral Hall and the main lanes. First-time visitors who want to include the middle and new settlements as well as the internal exhibition spaces should allow 2–3 hours and plan around the museum opening hours.

The old, middle and new settlements
The main interest at De'anli is not one single “museum” but the continuous settlement layout and the differences between its sections. The old settlement centres on Fang Clan Ancestral Hall and a “Hundred Birds Facing the Phoenix” layout. The middle settlement shows the “four-horse-drawn carriage” pattern and Southern Seas influences, while the new settlement has deeper lanes and more visible daily life.
Chaoshan houses and decorative crafts
You can see traditional house forms such as Four-Point Gold, Descending Tiger, Five-Room-Through and Three-Hall-Connected layouts. Look also for wood carving on beams and columns, stone carving on walls and ceramic mosaic decoration on roofs. Some buildings include Western-style arched windows and coloured tiles, but the condition, access and photography rules vary from house to house.
Who it suits
De'anli suits visitors interested in Chaoshan clan architecture, traditional settlements and photography, as well as people who enjoy walking slowly through lanes. When travelling with children, keep the focus on public paths, exterior architecture and open exhibition spaces; do not enter private courtyards to look for a particular detail.
Build your day
The 1–2-hour short route
Enter through the main gate, view the old settlement and Fang Clan Ancestral Hall, then walk through the bluestone lanes and leave towards the rear gate for food in the surrounding streets. The short route is about understanding the settlement as a whole, not inspecting every house one by one.
The 2–3-hour deeper route
Follow the order main gate → old settlement → middle settlement → new settlement → De'anli Museum and Art Gallery. If time and access allow, you can continue to the antique market or the surrounding old streets. On Mondays and Tuesdays, keep the route focused on lanes and exterior architecture rather than treating the exhibition spaces as a required stop.
Walking pace and departure
The visit is mainly on foot, and bluestone paving and narrow lanes slow the pace. You can return to the main gate or leave through the rear gate towards the surrounding market area. If Yinggeqing Theater is your next stop, allow time for a cross-area transfer; the two attractions are not connected as a walking pair.
Get there
Driving and rail transfer
Navigate to “De'anli”. A taxi from Puning Railway Station takes about 30 minutes. After arriving, decide whether you are entering from the main square or the rear-gate side, then follow the pedestrian signs through the village.
Parking
On public holidays, avoid driving into the narrow internal roads because the parking area inside the village can block traffic in and out. A safer plan is to park in a proper space along the outer road or near the market opposite the village, then walk in for a few minutes. Leaving from there is also easier than trying to turn around near the village entrance.
Know before you go
The boundary between public and private space
De'anli is still a lived-in village. Public lanes are open to visitors, but that does not mean every house, courtyard or exhibition room is accessible. Keep your voice down near residents’ doors, ask before photographing people or private interiors, and do not push open doors or enter closed areas.
Exhibition hours, supplies and footwear
The museum and art gallery close on Mondays and Tuesdays, and their hours are separate from those of the village lanes. Facilities inside the village are limited, so bring water and a small amount of food and wear comfortable flat shoes. The 15:00–17:00 light is useful for photographing old walls and lanes, but summer heat still requires breaks.
Nearby planning
Outside De'anli, you can combine the visit with Hongyang Zhongshan Arcade Street, Mianhu Ancient Town or a local Puning meal. If you are also visiting Yinggeqing Theater, confirm the performance time first, then arrange the transfer and meal; De'anli is not part of the theatre park and the two attractions do not share a ticket.
