Free wall access and paid tower entry
You can access Jingzhou’s ancient city wall for free from Nanjimen, also called the South Gate or Old South Gate. The North Gate and Small North Gate also have access points. Near Yinbin Gate at the East Gate is the Binyang Tower visitor center; going up Binyang Tower costs about CNY 35 and is a separate plan from walking the wall.
Wall opening hours
The wall currently opens at about 08:00 and closes at about 21:00, with last entry at 20:30. It works well for a daytime or early-evening section walk; check the day’s notice for the final arrangement. The full 11-kilometre circuit is not a realistic half-day route, so first-time visitors can start at Nanjimen and finish near the East Gate.

Brickwork and old-city views
The roughly 11-kilometre wall, its brickwork, ramparts, and gates are the main attractions. Looking inward gives views of low-rise old-city streets, while looking outward brings modern buildings into the frame. This section suits visitors who enjoy historic architecture, urban walking, and photography.
Nanjimen Barbican and the East Gate landmark
The gate opening at Nanjimen is good for framed photographs. Walking east, you can use Binyang Tower as a landmark for the East Gate. Entering the tower to see the scale model, Three Kingdoms figures, and corridors requires a separate tower ticket and should follow Binyang Tower’s opening hours.
Who it suits
Visitors who like a slower city walk, Three Kingdoms history, or architectural photography can choose one section of the wall. For night views, make Jinfeng Square (金凤广场) and the East Gate waterfront the finishing area. For quieter brickwork photographs, go earlier in the afternoon.

Build your day
A 1–1.5 hour South Gate to East Gate route
Enter the wall for free at Nanjimen and walk east along the ramparts. Pass the wall walkways and views of the city on both sides, take photographs outside Binyang Tower, and descend near the East Gate. From there, continue along Zhang Juzheng Street or use the East Gate for your bus, taxi, or parking connection.
A 3–4 hour wall-and-old-city route
Go up at Nanjimen and walk east, observing the wall, gates, and the changing views of the old and new city. Photograph Binyang Tower from below near the East Gate, then descend and continue to the Former Residence of Zhang Juzheng. If time and energy allow, add Guandi Temple inside the old city and finish at Jinfeng Square outside the wall for reflections of Binyang Tower and the moat.
A Friday-to-Sunday evening route
The East Gate is the best starting area for an evening visit from Friday to Sunday. Binyang Tower light shows commonly run at 19:00 and 19:30, but tower entry and the show remain subject to the day’s notice. Check the evening schedule before setting out. At night, stay on lit or familiar sections and finish the unlit East Gate–South Gate section before dark.

Buses, railway stations, and gate navigation
Jingzhou has no metro. Local travel relies on buses, ride-hailing cars, taxis, and shared electric bikes. From Jingzhou Railway Station, a taxi to the old city takes about 30 minutes; then navigate to Nanjimen, the East Gate, or the North Gate.
Parking and movement inside the wall
Roads inside the old city are narrow and can be congested during holidays. Park at an official or public car park outside the old city, then walk or use a shared electric bike. For the Nanjimen route, park on the South Gate side and arrange your return from the East Gate after the walk.
Know before you go
Lighting and night-walk safety
Some parts of the wall between the East and South Gates have no lighting. Finish that section before dark; if you must pass through it, carry a torch and use a lit exit where possible. Bricks, steps, and ramparts add to the walking effort, so comfortable shoes matter more than completing the entire circuit.
Tickets, crowds, and food
Walking the wall is free; Binyang Tower charges separately. A temporary discount for recent middle- and high-school graduates presenting their exam admission card applies only on designated dates; it is not a general ticket policy. Weekends and holidays bring more school groups, and toilets on the wall are limited. Use facilities below before setting out, then consider Huangtang Fish Noodle Restaurant, Wuyi Road, or Dasai Lane for food.
