Location and historical expectation
The Former Residence of Zhang Juzheng is inside the East Gate of Jingzhou Ancient City, at 2 Jingzhou South Road. Enter through the attraction gate; Binyang Tower is nearby. The present site is a reconstructed memorial complex built on the former Jiangling Stele Garden. The original residence at his birthplace no longer survives, so plan this as a memorial hall and garden visit rather than a preserved Ming residence.
Ticket and opening hours
Admission is CNY 20 per person. No advance reservation is normally needed; tickets can be bought on site or online. The regular window is about 08:00–17:30 from Monday to Thursday, with last entry at 17:00; Friday to Sunday may extend into the evening, and holidays may follow a different schedule. If you plan to visit late in the day, check the ticket notice for that date. The site fits well into an East Gate walk and is close to Binyang Tower.

Taiyue Tang and Pengri Lou
Taiyue Tang (太岳堂) presents Zhang Juzheng’s life and career, while Pengri Lou (捧日楼) focuses on his reforms and related displays. Visitors interested in Ming history or Zhang’s reforms can make these the first stops on the longer route.
Taishi Ju, Chunzhong Tang, and the rear garden
Taishi Ju (太师居) contains a portrait of Zhang Juzheng, Chunzhong Tang (纯忠堂) preserves a Chinese inscription, and the rear garden has rockeries, ponds, and old trees. The buildings, corridors, and moon gates are photogenic, but the displays and garden belong to a reconstructed memorial complex; the original Ming residence has not survived.
Who it suits
Visitors who enjoy Ming history, historical biographies, and classical gardens should allow at least 30 minutes. If your main interest is the East Gate, use the site as a stop before or after Binyang Tower. Visitors with little interest in Zhang Juzheng may find the CNY 20 admission best suited to a short visit.
Build your day
A 30–45 minute quick route
Enter and begin with the portrait in Taishi Ju, then visit Chunzhong Tang and see the Chinese inscription there. Finish with the rear garden before leaving. This keeps the route focused on the portrait, inscription, and garden and fits easily with other East Gate stops.
A 1–1.5 hour highlights route
Start at Taiyue Tang for Zhang Juzheng’s biography, continue to Pengri Lou for the reform displays, then visit Taishi Ju and Chunzhong Tang. Slow down in the rear garden at the end. After leaving, walk north to Binyang Tower or follow Zhang Juzheng Street for breakfast and snacks.
Memorial hall and tomb combination
Zhang Juzheng’s tomb is about 1.5 kilometres away and can be a separate stop for visitors with a deeper interest in his life. It is a different location, not part of the indoor rooms here. Return to the East Gate after the memorial visit, then decide whether to continue to the tomb according to the day’s transport.

Bus and East Gate walk
Take buses 19, 20, 33, or 101 to the “East Gate” stop, then walk to 2 Jingzhou South Road. Search for “Former Residence of Zhang Juzheng” in your map app and look for the attraction gate after reaching the East Gate. The entrances for Binyang Tower and the wall are separate.
Parking
Drivers can use the East Gate car park or the visitor-center car park outside the old city, then walk into the East Gate area. Roads inside the old city may be congested during holidays. The entrance itself is not a dependable parking point; Binyang Tower and Zhang Juzheng Street are easier to connect on foot after the visit.
Know before you go
Set expectations for the reconstructed site
This is a reconstructed memorial complex; the original residence no longer survives. If you expect a preserved Ming home, the visit will feel different from that expectation. Taiyue Tang, Pengri Lou, Taishi Ju, Chunzhong Tang, and the rear garden make up the main visit and suit a 30–90 minute stop.
Interactive scenes, food, and evening plans
Staff-led scenes such as the “imperial examination” interaction may appear in the afternoon, but the programme varies by day. After the visit, look for Huangtang Fish Noodle Restaurant, Qijie Guokui, or Ayong Guokui along Zhang Juzheng Street. For an evening visit, check the return transport in the East Gate area as well.
